de wont start after reinstall, nvidia-304xx

I just reinstalled arch and now I cant get the DE to load.
I wrote down everything I did last time and followed it exactly, Ive used arch as my only os for over a year now and have been using it on three different machines over the last couple years.

The setup on the computer that Im having problems on is
arch 64
cinnamon //I have also tried gnome, that crashes too
nvidia 304xx //GeForce 7100 / nForce 630i

I have not installed nouveau, but it lists driver (nvidia), kernal modules (nouveau, nvidia)

nvidia has been tested with and without nvidia-304xx-libgl, and the mesa libgl.
when done with the mesa ligbl it can sometimes boot to a "usable" desktop but is stuck in software rendering mode.

vesa is the only thing that is working.
nvidia, after startx will either load to a black screen with or without a mouse.. or it will load the desktop and then freeze.

I have noticed that the nvidia-304xx had some change to it within the last 6 days but I have no clue what Im doing, up untill this point everything has just worked.

any advice, solutions, ideas?

Welcome to Arch Linux.   Please post your Xorg.0.log file.   It is either in ~/.local/share/xorg or /var/log depending on how you started Xorg.

Thanks, here is my Xorg.0.log
Sorry for the delay, I had to reinstall everything again to generate it so tis a bit different. This one is with the nvidia-304xxlibgl, and the symptoms are a black screen that does nothing and requires a pressign the power button to restart.

*edit*
when startx is ran while loged in as root, x will load up and the screen will flash and then x closes out and goes back to the terminal.
when startx is ran while loged in as a normal user, x will load up, the screen will go black, and it will draw a mouse that I can controll but nothing else.
note, for normal user log, it says the monitor doesnt suport 3d vision but Ive been using this monitor for the better part of a year with no problem.

Re: de wont start after reinstall, nvidia-304xx

I don't see any EE (error) lines in there... post:

dmesg | grep -i 'error\|warn\|exception'

And

dmesg | grep -i nvidia

I updated a post I made above yours with an alternate xorg log

note, it mentions bois and acpi.. I always get acpi and ascpi/whatever mixed up but to run linux I have to go into the bois and disable it.. its always been like that and never been a probelm, if its the power option in the bois this problem comes from a windows based bois and didnt affect the system at all expcept for software not being able to power down the computer.

dmesg | grep -i 'error\|warn\|exception'

Re: de wont start after reinstall, nvidia-304xx

Sadly, I don't use Cinnamon or nVidia.  But, it sounds to me like the problem is not X.   Let's back up a couple steps.  How are you staring X?  Do you have an ~/.xinitrc file?

I would like to see if we can get twm to run.  So, with no .xinitrc in your $HOME directory, and with xterm, xorg-xinit and xorg-xclock installed, just run startx from the console as your user.  If you get a screen with three terminals and a clock, that is good.  We can move on after establishing that baseline.

Agreed with ewaller.  Can you try an alternative greeter to rule out a config issue or do as suggested in post #6.

yes, I use startx to start everything, my .xinitrc file has "exec cinnamon-session" in it, and when I tired gnome I switched to to "exec gnome-session" or whatever it said to on the arch gnome wiki.

as a normal user I deleted .xinitrc from my home folder, entered startx and the screen just flashed. I ran pacman -Rs *everything I use to install X, video card, cinnamon, and lxterminal*, then pacman -S *everything that was there before* and now Im waiting at the screen with three terminals and a clock.

what next?

Yea, Ill try whatever is suggested. This is a clean install so Ive got literally nothing to loose but time and Ive allready wasted enough of that over the course of the last two days trying everything from installing different dependancys to trying to remake the nvidia-304xx package from last month. -problem with that last one is makepkg just loops over sourcecode some code that didnt do with the first two packages.. thinking the linux headers are the wrong ones and can't find that so I decided instead of chasing ghosts Id come here and ask if for help.. so yea, Im not about to turn anything down or be stubborn.

Re: de wont start after reinstall, nvidia-304xx

Okay, that is good.   First X would not start twm, then you installed something you need (not sure what) and now X runs.  Kill all three of those terminals (just type Ctrl-D when selected) .
Then restore your .xinitrc to run cinnamon and try again.

made ~./xinitrc, ran startx, screen went black, have nothing but a mouse like stated in the original problem.
