Gnome does not start on fresh Arch install

Got a pre-production Skylake notebook for a few days with an i915 and an nvidia card so I quickly installed Arch on it to see how compatible it is. The quadro M1000M doesn't really work at all but using only the Intel card XFCE starts fine with the provided startxfce4 script and also seems to work flawlessly (though appearently lacking even 2D acceleration).

Gnome however fails to start either using the `exec gnome-session` way from xinitrc or by starting gdm from systemd. Both methods end up with the same "Oh no something has gone wrong" dialog and then Xorg quits on me. Where should I look for logs with any related information? Journalctl did not really have anything useful, gdm's error log is completely empty. Any hints?

Post your Xorg log (should be ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log)

Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found) - I'm not sure why one couldn't just run on the initialized intel card instead..

Re: Gnome does not start on fresh Arch install

It says "Server terminated successfully", so that seems to work.

Since you have a Intel/Nvidia hybrid graphics setup you should take a look at these wiki pages and see what works for you:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee

Re: Gnome does not start on fresh Arch install

For now I'd be glad to have a 2d accelerated desktop setup running on the iris pro card and ignore the nvidia card completely.

What I don't really get is why Xorg can't start gnome while it starts xfce just fine.. Any idea on this?

That is due to the different way xfce and gnome do things, Xorg has no influence on that.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Gnome does not start on fresh Arch install

So what exactly do you suggest to get gnome working as well?

Re: Gnome does not start on fresh Arch install

first, install mesa-demos and run glxinfo .

It will give lots of information about the OpenGL capabilities on your setup.
glxinfo | grep -i renderer is a quick way to find out whether HW accelaration is used and which type.

You got some options :

- disable the nvidia card in bios/uefi firmware . (some systems allow that,others don't . )

- configure your system to use nvidia optimus (usually this requires a custom xorg.conf file)

- configure your system to use bumblebee

Re: Gnome does not start on fresh Arch install

What I did meanwhile was getting Bumblebee to work and after that also disabling the intel card in the bios and getting nvidia working as expected. In other words, I have working GLX with direct rendering on the nvidia card with or without the dual setup and also running Bioshock Infinite happily on it.

Gnome still doesn't start though, it looks the exact same as described in the first post smile

Re: Gnome does not start on fresh Arch install

No, I disabled wayland and even stripped the wayland and xorg-server-wayland packages from the system. Startx fails to start (with my xinitrc having `exec gnome-session` in it), and gdm also crashes continously in a loop.
