How do I type in Japanese in i3wm?

On gnome or any other desktop manager I could easily achieve this by following the archwiki. However, for i3 I was never able to type in Japanese the way I want. What I think need to be solve is to get the ibus applet running. If I can get it running in the i3bar I should be able to press on it and change the keyboard layout. If anybody get any other solution on getting Japanese keyboard layout running on i3 please tell me. Thank you

I use SCIM to enter Japanese text into Openbox (which I assume is pretty similar to i3 in its simplicity). The instructions for SCIM in the Arch Linux Wiki still look the same as what I used to set it up.

What surprises me is that the wiki page doesn't actually mention how to start typing in Japanese: At any text input, press Ctrl + Spacebar.

Let me know if you need any more information or details about my configuration.

Is SCIM the only option for Japanese input in window manager? I would like to use a input method which are still being maintain and develop, but if SCIM work great I guess I will settle with that.

I'm using IBus with Anthy without any issues. Install 'ibus' and 'ibus-anthy' and follow the instructions in the wiki : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBus

EDIT : I didn't see that you've already tried it... Try adding 'ibus-daemon -drx' to your .xprofile. That's how I start IBus after the X session starts.

EDIT-2 : Sorry, add the command to .xinitrc instead of .xprofile, or source your .xprofile from your .xinitrc (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xprofile)

I just want to update on what eventually work for me:

Install fcitx-mozc and fcitx-im and put the following text in the .xinitrc file:

export GTK_IM_MODULE=fcitx
export QT_IM_MODULE=fcitx
export XMODIFIERS="@im=fcitx"
fcitx
