144hz monitor all games run at 60hz

Hello,

I have a dual monitor setup with 144hz and 60hz 1080p. Nvidia-settings show that these monitors have the correct max refresh rates. However anytime i start a game from steamos (haven tried anything else yet) it starts in 60hz mode. Even when the 144hz monitor is set as primary. Does any of you have some advice to me as how to fix?

Update:
It seems Cinnamon does something to my settings when i login so it ignores some settings from xorg.conf. After login if i reset the res and hz in nvidia-settings and start a game i now can run it at 144hz... but howto make cinnamon not auto-set all my resolution stuff... ?
