Xorg or nVidia: Either X doesn't start or Gnome crashes on load.

After sending my laptop in for repairs, it was badly out of date. After getting it back I used to to make sure that it was still functional, and downloaded (pacman -Syuw) packages two days ago. I also scrubbed all btrfs volumes and the data was found to be good. I used the laptop for two days with the thought of verifying that the hardware was good. Today, I ran "pacman -Su" to install the packages. Aside from the mirror list, there was no indications of needing manual intervention.

I restarted my laptop, and then tried to start X. It just hung there. So, I do what I usually do -- I deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the contents of xorg.conf.d/. This improved the situation by starting X, and Gnome, but Gnome went "oops".  So I tried running "nvidia-xconfig". This didn't help. I tried combinations of the old xorg.conf file, the old "20-nvidia.conf" file, and the new xorg.conf file. Again, not working. I checked to make sure that nothing was blacklisted in /etc/pacman.conf which might result in a partial upgrade. Nothing.

I looked at the Wiki and saw that I might be missing microcode. Indeed, I somehow forgot to install intel-ucode on my laptop. I installed "intel-ucode" and ran "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg". On the plus side, I now how the microcode set up, which is a big plus, but I still can't start Gnome.

Thinking that there is no hard in trying, I added "nvidia" to the modules list in mkinicpio.conf and ran pacman -S linux to rerun mkinicpio. This didn't help, but I didn't expect it to.

Below is the Xorg.0.log file which is suppose to contain the relevant information related to the issue. I couldn't divine anything from it.

Probably too hasty suggesting that bug your Xorg.0.log shows

How are you starting gnome?

Re: Xorg or nVidia: Either X doesn't start or Gnome crashes on load.

My computers start in getty, where I log in and run "startx" My .xinitrc is below

#!/bin/sh

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

/usr/bin/xscreensaver -no-splash & # for screensaver/lock
exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice

There is no file ".xsession-errors" in my home directory.

journctl shows a core dump. "Process 825 (gnome-shell) of user 1000 dumped core." Then the trace back.

Then "kernel: gnome-shell[852]: segfault at 14 ip 00007f6187391435 sp 00007ffe4143bd0 error 4 in lib mutter.so.0.0.0[7f618734d000+fd00]

Hmm. That doesn't look good.

Edit: I think it may be https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/46724

What does the backtrace from the coredump show? Examining_a_core_dump

I run "startx", which crashed, switched to TTY2, logged in and ran sudo coredumpctl list to find the PID, which is 893, for gnome-shell. I than run coredumpctl info 893. The result is below.

Re: Xorg or nVidia: Either X doesn't start or Gnome crashes on load.

As a test if you remove 20-nvidia.conf and replace nvidia-libgl with mesa-libgl does gnome-session then successfully start?

Re: Xorg or nVidia: Either X doesn't start or Gnome crashes on load.

No, unfortunately that didn't help.

I also reviewed the Optimus Wiki entry and saw that my xorg.conf was missing two lines.

BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
Option "AccelMethod" "none"

I made sure that the address was correct with lspci. I tried both with and without 20-nvidia.conf.

Edit: I also tried sna and uxa for AccelMethod.

Edit2: I tried installing and launching cinnamon, but that too is crashing with a core dump.

Re: Xorg or nVidia: Either X doesn't start or Gnome crashes on load.

Using the Arch Rollback Machine, I found that going from November 21st to 22nd was causing the issue. Then by performing select package upgrades (partial upgrades) I found that Xorg was at fault. I did have to force the upgrade since nvidia opened a file that xorg-server also laid claim to. Surprisingly, it worked. After partially upgrading to Nov 22nd, I blacklisted the Xorg packages.  I then successfully upgraded my systems sans Xorg to whatever is current an hour ago.

That seemed to work well enough (I could startx), so I decided to try removing the black list on the Xorg packages and run a proper upgrade. Then I couldn't startx. I then downgraded all the way to November 21st again, then to current, thinking that perhaps it had to do with the partial upgrade. I ran pacdiff. Still can't startx.
