unable to extend LV - Buffer I/O error … dm-* … lost sync page write

Hi,

I would like to extend LV for root partition, but I got this error:

# lvextend -L+8G /dev/vg0/root
Size of logical volume vg0/root changed from 16,00 GiB (4096 extents) to 24,00 GiB (6144 extents).
/dev/mapper/raid0p3: write failed after 0 of 2048 at 12288: Operation not permitted.
  Failed to write VG vg0.

My configuration:

# pacman -Q linux lvm2
linux 4.2.5-1
lvm2 2.02.136-1
# pvs

  ...
# mount | grep vg0-root
/dev/mapper/vg0-root on / type ext4 (rw,relatime,stripe=64,data=ordered)

Thanks for any suggestions...

Re: unable to extend LV - Buffer I/O error … dm-* … lost sync page write

Was that the session you tried lvextend in?

Something is very wrong when errors occur on dm-devices and not underlying storage too.

If this is dmraid, what's the status of that raid? dmsetup table?

Re: unable to extend LV - Buffer I/O error … dm-* … lost sync page write

Yes, this is the session I have tried to extend LV in.

My configuration is:

RAID 5 (3 hdd) [
    /boot
    LUKS [
        LVM [
            /, /home, ...
        ]
    ]
]

I believe the RAID is OK; HDDs are pretty new and I have synced them a week ago (with no error).

# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]
md126 : active raid5 sdb[2] sdc[1] sda[0]
      3907022848 blocks super external:/md127/0 level 5, 128k chunk, algorithm 0 [3/3] [UUU]

md127 : inactive sdc[2](S) sda[1](S) sdb[0](S)
      9459 blocks super external:imsm

unused devices: <none>

dmsetup table:

# dmsetup table

Re: unable to extend LV - Buffer I/O error … dm-* … lost sync page write

I found the dmesg errors are all related to all of my logical volumes. Still unable to solve this error.

Re: unable to extend LV - Buffer I/O error … dm-* … lost sync page write

I've found a strange configuration on cryptsetup:

# cryptsetup status raid0p3
/dev/mapper/raid0p3 is active and is in use.
  type: LUKS1
  cipher: aes-xts-plain64
  keysize: 256 bits
  device: /dev/md126p3
  offset: 4096 sectors
  size: 7813507039 sectors
  mode: readonly

I don't understand why is the mode "readonly" and why I'm able to write to LVs and unable to modify the VG.

I'm using same configuration (except of RAID) on my other computer and it works fine - and shows "read/write" mode in cryptsetup status.

Any idea?

PS: I've tried to open LUKS partition and LVs in live Arch (with same kernel) and it works fine - no error in dmesg and it shows "read/write" mode.
I've extended the LV too, but I still want to solve this damned mystery...

Re: unable to extend LV - Buffer I/O error … dm-* … lost sync page write

If the cryptsetup is readonly, that would explain a lot of things. Unfortunately that is not shown in dmsetup table.

Can you also show your /etc/crypttab, and mdadm --detail /dev/md*; mdadm --examine /dev/sd* in case the md itself is readonly?

/etc/crypttab is empty because the encrypted device is opened according to grub configuration:
