Firefox 43 - no sound

Have tried on youtube. Here https://bbs.archlinux.org/search.php?se … =522722014 have found Firefox now started to use ffmpeg instead of gsreamer for sound. ffmpeg is installed. How to cure? Haven't found any ffmpeg-relaated configuration files.

P.S. My sound system is solely based on Alsa as far as I have multi-card environment where pulseaudio has proved to be absolutely crazy and crap. Default alsa devices does work without problems, of course.

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

I have no problem on youtube with firefox 43, I can hear sound on videos, I don't use flash plugin, I use html5 mode for videos in youtube ( you can try to disable flash plugin in order to see if the problem disapears ),

I don't use pulseaudio,

maybe you have installed some problematics packages related to gstreamer for firefox, a solution would be to uninstall these problematic packages,

what is the output of the command "pacman -Qs gstreamer" ?

on my PC I have these packages related to gstreamer :

HI! Thanks for the information sharing!

I don't understand the way gstreamer-related packages can influence the situation as far as Firefox is built without gstreamer support.
As for ffmpeg-related packages, I haven't ffmpeg-compat installed. Have installed now, but, unfortunately, didn't help.

Yes, I have checked HTML5 player was in use in youtube.

Has anybody further ideas where to look and what to do?

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

Firefox terminal output maybe? does firefox play to the correct card?

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

Maybe it doesn't use the 'default' device but hardcodedly uses the first device 'hw:0' or similar

Thanks for ideas. Terminal just show some gtk theme related warning. fuser doesn't list any devices used by firefox - just kmix is listed being related with controls.

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

Also I have tried just to ffplay sound file - no problems detected. Any options were not used, that is playing back with default ones is OK.

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

Firefox 43 is compiled to use GTK3 by default, which is incompatible with Adobe Flash and which uses ffmpeg instead of gstreamer. Switching Youtube to use HTML5 will solve some of your problems.

Sorry, but all this was already mentioned - yes, ffmpeg is using instead of gstreamer, and HTML5 player is using instead of flash one. It still doesn't take any clue how to resolve the issue.

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

you can try these tests :

- run firefox with a new profile : type "firefox -p" in a console

- disable ( or uninstall ) flash plugin

- create a new user account and connect to KDE/gnome with this new user, it will use a new /home, it can help to know if it's a problem located in your home ( a bad configuration for alsa, or for gtk applications )

the idea is to recreate a neutral environment, in order to be sure that there will be no wrong settings about firefox or the sound configuration ( alsa )

Reporting smile
- on the way I have created new profile for own use just to stop carrying all that configuration accumulated during years; the issue still exitsts
- have tried to disable flash plugin without success
- there isn't any user-base alsa configuration - system-wide (and immutable) /etc/asound.conf is the only one.

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

I've the same issue here - ffmpeg installed, flash has never been installed on this machine, firefox can't play any sound.

I noticed this first via Duolingo, which worked fine yesterday with 42.x.

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

Let me, please, rephrase the issue.

Has anybody got sound on Firefox 43 without pulseaudio?

It works again for me with 43.0-2 (which too a while to get to my local mirrors), but do not I'm using pulseuadio.

I have found the last to be 43.0.1-1 (and it is affected by the issue).

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

Just want to add I have tried to use pulseaudio for experiment - Firefox works as expected. So, as far as Firefox uses ffmpeg, there is some directive telling ffmpeg to use pulse. I haven't still got an idea where to find that directive smile

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

FWIW firefox NEVER cares about your .asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf, if you have multiple cards, the only way to set a "default card" to it is modprobe.d slot/index options, or the pulseaudio you claimed to be crazy.

I doubt it has anything to do with ffmpeg. Also firefox + ffmpeg works here with ALSA.

Yes, you are prophet, I have conf file in modprobe.d with listed cards, and the default alsa device belongs to the first card, if it does matter. And well, FF 42 HTML5 player did work. Nothing was changed on the sound configuration here or there.
I have tried
- clean profile,
- tiling window manager (knowing nothing about sound - bspwm),
- FF 44beta,
- another user,

... What wasn't tested? Don't know smile

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

Yes it does matters, because firefox only plays to the first card (hw:0,0) with ALSA.

By "42 did work" do you mean it did work "sometimes ago" or you actually tried switch it back and forth with pacman and once you switch to 43 it stops working and once you switch to 42 it works?

Using 43.0.1-1 here.

Thanks for the hint! I have tried to install FF 42 - yes, it does work, but it prefer Falshplayer for some reason. If I disable the last one, it activates HTML5 player, and it doesn't work - it can sound during a second and then stop or just stop. FF 43 HTML5 player just plays video (doesn't stop as FF 42) without sound.

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

What if you uninstall ffmpeg (and opus), so that only libvpx and libvorbis is available?

By the way since 43.0-2 gstreamer is enabled again, so I don't know whether it can interfere if you have the plugins installed.

May also try uninstall flash instead of only have it disabled tongue

Re: Firefox 43 - no sound

Have tried to remove flashplayer already.
The first 43.0 was without gstreamer, and the issue already existed that time.
Not sure how to uninstall ffpgeg/opus - too big dependents tree.

BTW, I have tried to resolve the issue on #ffmpeg - those members told me ffmpeg is used for video only.

Well I guess never mind then. It probably doesn't matter anyway. Since the only thing on my machine depends on ffmpeg is mpv, and only ffmpeg depends on opus. And yeah they are probably right, it's only used for H.264.

EDIT: Wait, it is probably used for AAC (mp4 audio) as well.

EDIT2: Actually you can try set "media.fragmented-mp4.enabled" and "media.mediasource.enabled" to false in about:config, then the only videos can be played should be using libvpx and libvorbis (wihout gstreamer), which was the past behaviour of firefox.

Aha, thanks, this way behaviour is exactly the same as I have described above for FF 42 - plays (and sounds) a second or so.
