[SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

I cannot see any optical disc drive to PCManFM. It isn't shown to the sidebar.

I didn't make any change to my system, only the regular updates for the Arch. Where should I look?

I use laptop and and the CD/DVD drive works fine (I've booted some distros to be sure).

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

Just a thought, might try drag n dropping them into the sidebar ? Only messed around with pcmanfm so have no idea if that'd work for you. Mostly used thunar ... n which dragging stuff into the sidebar works fine.

Maybe from the drop down menu  Edit > Preferences > Layout > Show in Places > Devices

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

Thank you for your replies.

Actually it must be a general problem beyond the file manager. I also tried thunar and it is still the same problem.

The disc drive doesn't load on the file manager also doesn't appear to the available devices and CD software like Brasero and xfburn. It doesn't appear from the system.

Is gvfsd running? How are you starting the session?

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

Yes gvfsd is running. The running gvsfd are the above

gvfsd-trash
gvfsd-network
gvfsd-metadata
gvfsd-fuse
gvfsd-dnssd
gvfsd-computer
gvfsd
gvfsd-udisks2-volume-monitor
gvfsd-afc-volume-monitor

My xinitrc is

# Disable beep sound on boot
xset b off &
xset b 0 0 0 &

# Enable Numpad on boot
numlockx &

# Start LXDE
exec startlxde
#exec openbox

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

I've tried with other DE like Mate and XFCE and the problem exists.

Something is missing and I can't find any help from the wiki.

Any thoughts?

Maybe you should start here. Check the output of dmesg for anything that might point to why it isn't being detected. If it is detected you should have /dev/sr0.

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

Are you starting your DE/WM with startx? If so paste your .xinitrc.

But yeah check whether sr0 is in `lsblk` first.

Also are you expecting it to show up when there is no disc inside or when there is?

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

I start my DE, LXDE with startx.

My xinitrc is

# Disable beep sound on boot
xset b off &
xset b 0 0 0 &

# Enable Numpad on boot
numlockx &

# Start LXDE
exec startlxde
#exec openbox

lsblk doesn't show sr0 either with a disc insert or not.

From the dmesg is get this part

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

Can't you post your full dmesg here or to a pastebin? If sr0 doesn't show up it is about the kernel/hardware. How is the drive connected?

P.S. Add this to the top of your .xinitrc to make sure dbus works correctly, although it has nothing to do with your CURRENT problem: https://ptpb.pw/dREl.txt

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

It is an internal disc driver of a laptop. It works with other bootable distros, but now with this current system.

The whole dmesg

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

The sata link down message might not even be related, it just means nothing is connected to that port.

@Marvix
Load one distro that works and save the output of 'lsusb', then compare it with the output in arch and try to load any missing modules until the drive works.

But yes, to be 100% sure, he can boot another distro and check libata's output in dmesg there to confirm that it is the optical drive and works fine with the kernel there, and then perhaps file a bug report upstream.

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

Have you tried putting in a media (disk) ? If so ... still doesn't show ? You do have a disk util installed on the system ? Maybe try "ls /dev" and look for it. Finally a thought would be adding an entry for it to /etc/fstab, after creating a mount pt etc. Another oddball suggestion is see that. In particular perhaps add your user to optical group. Though note according to the arch wiki, optical is listed as one of the groups deprecated after switch to systemd and could cause conflicts/problems. Really wouldn't resort to adding an entry to fstab for this. It's just something odd being overlooked.

Not overly familiar with Arch atm and never came up against this issue myself. So beyond this possibly useless info. Good luck.

No, it doesn't. The OP never said if the optical drive is sata or pata and assuming either could be wrong. The sata link down is normal for a port that is not connected, and given that we don't know if the optical drive is sata or not it might as well be working as intended. See example with many ports with link down

Heh apparently you have a special board. It clearly shows that in the OP's dmesg that unused ports are shown as "DUMMY", as in mine.

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

In my case it is a laptop with AMD hardware but I see the same with a Gigabyte board with Intel hardware and a board with NVidia+AMD hardware. The case of dummy ports may be common but it is the first time I've noticed it.

On the other hand, the message "sata link down" makes a lot more sense for ports that are not connected than the dummy message. To me dummy means that it doesn't do anything regardless of whether you connect anything there or not, which in the case of dummy ports I would guess you can't because there is no connector on the board and most probably the chipset lacks some of the hardware needed.

I don't have any other distro than TAILS and one USB flash drive available.

I've insert a DVD movie and a media disk and still nothing.

The disk is installed in the /dev directory.

I've to install some dependencies and the brasero and k3b, without a positive result.

Also I've tried to create a optical group and add the user, but it didn't work.

How can I add it to the /etc/fstab?

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

Would just employ the forum search option or better use google advanced search operators. ie: site:https://bbs.archlinux.org/index.php search-terms-go-here.

So you have found the designation/name of the drive ? Still not seeing why this should be such a pita but keep at it and ye shall prevail ! smile

Re: [SOLVED] No disc available (CD/DVD drive)

It's silly to mess everything else than testing with other kernels (hence distros) if the drive is not listed in lsblk.
