BRC43142 cannot get back to wifi networks after suspend

Dear Arch Linux users,

I have a HP Pavilion 15 p231 laptop which has BCM43142 wifi[1] and it does not work properly.

Symptoms:

  • Sometimes wifi becomes terribly slow. (I'd address that in a separate thread so let's not focus on this here. Though it may be important to know.)

  • After a suspend-resume cycle, wifi refuses to connect to anything, it does not even see networks.

Now, for this latter issue, after resuming from suspend, I see the following error message appearing periodically in dmesg:

[  920.101094] ERROR @wl_cfg80211_scan : WLC_SCAN error (-22)
[  983.141385] ERROR @wl_cfg80211_scan : WLC_SCAN error (-22)
[ 1046.233969] ERROR @wl_cfg80211_scan : WLC_SCAN error (-22)

A couple of details:

  • Happens with latest linux and linux-lts kernels

  • Driver: broadcom-wl-dkms from AUR

  • Output of systemctl status.

  • Output of dmesg

  • I have intentionally disabled netctl and wpa_supplicant services recently hoping that the problem was some sort of race for resources between these and NetworkManager. This did not make any difference.

  • This never worked on this laptop so far. I bought it in August 2015.

Please let me know what further details may be required to resolve this. Thanks in advance for trying to help me!

Best regards,
Denes

[1] This is actually controversial:

$ lspci | grep -i network
08:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)
$ dmesg | grep BCM
[ 13.772899] Bluetooth: hci0: BCM: Reading local version info failed (-110)
[   17.534623] wlan0: Broadcom BCM4365 802.11 Hybrid Wireless Controller 6.30.223.271 (r587334)

So is it BCM43142 or BCM4365? brcmfmac which supports BCM4365 does not work with this card, I've tried that.
