[SOLVED] Virtualbox 5.0.12-1 crashes when starting VMs

My latest -Syu upgraded virtualbox-host-modules and virtualbox from 5.0.10-2 to 5.0.12-1. After rebooting the host, I have this peculiar issue where VMs that I have started recently crash within seconds after I start them, whereas VMs I had not run in a long time start up without problems.

The VMs that fail to start also had a "saved state" on them, but since the crash, Virtualbox shows them as "Aborted". The weird problem is that the log didn't show anything. I now realize that Vbox doesn't rotate the log until after it's started, so my old logs show only successful starts prior to the upgrade and my current log only show the starts after I had downgraded, missing exactly the period that I needed the log sad  I can re-apply the update and post back with the fail logs, if this problem doesn't ring a bell with anyone else...?

Edit: Marked SOLVED in my case - setting the Host Audio Driver to PulseAudio on the guest.

Did you check the pacman log to see if there is any additional work to do for VirtualBox? sometimes have to rerun modprove vboxdrv after -Syu at minimum.

Re: [SOLVED] Virtualbox 5.0.12-1 crashes when starting VMs

No additional work logged in pacman.log and I had rebooted the host afterwards, so all modules were loaded. The weird thing is that VMs that I had not started for a long time run without problems, it's just the ones I always run that fail now.

ok, haven't -Syu'd since last month so still running 5.10 Virtualbox. (modprobe in previous thread, typo). Anything show up in dmesg? Anything from the AUR that needs to be updated also? I'm just going over the usual stuff i run into with VBox after an -Syu.If you have a backup of them, have you tried removing them from VirtuabBox and then import them from the backup?

Re: [SOLVED] Virtualbox 5.0.12-1 crashes when starting VMs

I also have issues starting VMs with 5.0.12. Log shows the following error:

Dec 21 16:48:27 xxx kernel: EMT-3[2016]: segfault at 18 ip 00007f3c12673da1 sp 00007f3c441f9ca0 error 4 in VBoxDD.so[7f3c125fe000+182000]

Google thinks this is caused by using older version of Extension Pack. I did however also upgrade virtualbox-ext-oracle to 5.0.12 so I think they messed something up with extension pack. I downgraded to 5.0.10 for now.

Did you remove the old ext pack from the session before booting the session? If not, try that then boot the guest and load the new ext pack - if its just a mis-match session rev vs ext pack rev....

Re: [SOLVED] Virtualbox 5.0.12-1 crashes when starting VMs

I have exactly the same problem after update on all virtual machines (AMD A10)
In dmesg I only found:
vboxdrv: ffffffffa0af9020 VMMR0.r0
vboxdrv: ffffffffa0a73020 VBoxDDR0.r0
vboxdrv: ffffffffa001e020 VBoxDD2R0.r0

Virtualbox shows the following failure:
General failure - DON'T USE THIS!!!. (VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE).
Fehlercode:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Komponente:
ConsoleWrap
Interface:
IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}

The version of all components is the same 5.0.12

Re: [SOLVED] Virtualbox 5.0.12-1 crashes when starting VMs

@WFV: I rebooted after upgrade and VirtualBox had ext pack 5.0.12 listed under preferences...

segfault was only reported in journal, not in dmesg

on the sidenote 5.0.12 appears to be running on my T520 laptop with Intel i5-2520M CPU; it doesn't work on AMD FX-8350 so maybe it's cpu related

Re: [SOLVED] Virtualbox 5.0.12-1 crashes when starting VMs

OK - you're not going to believe this, but in my case, in my Audio settings, on the VMs that were crashing, I switched the Host Audio Driver from "ALSA Audio Driver" to "PulseAudio" and now they start fine on 5.0.12-1. I never cared about audio on my guests in the first place, but when I started to compare a guest that did start and ones that didn't, this was one of the differences.

Please post back if this also fixes your problem for others reporting the same issue and I'll mark it solved.

Edit: you will probably have to have Pulse Audio installed, I'm guessing, for that to work. If not, try setting it to the Null audio adapter instead

Re: [SOLVED] Virtualbox 5.0.12-1 crashes when starting VMs

@fluke571: thanks I'll keep that in mind, haven't -Syu'd yet, maybe this weekend. Are you running graysky's piledriver linux kernel (optimized for the vishera cpu's)? I am and also the vbox-piledriver stuff.

@WFV: I'm on vanilla linux-lts + virtualbox-ext-oracle from AUR
