Issues with installing proprietary AMD drivers

I have an AMD r9 290 and I had been playing around with installing these drivers for like 3 days now, twice I had already bricked my system (the 2nd time around I was "smart" and had a tar backup of the system).
I would really appreciate if someone told me were I went wrong and how to properly install these drivers.

Here are the steps I took to try and install the drivers:
1)Added the repos for xorg116 and amd catalyst (decided to go with the unofficial repo so that I so I will not have to fix it every time I upgrade the kernel).
These repos had been added on top of the repos in the /etc/pacman.conf file.

[catalyst]
SigLevel = Never
Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch
## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
#Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/catalyst/$arch
#Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/catalyst/$arch

[xorg116]
SigLevel = Never
Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/xorg116/$arch
## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
#Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/xorg116/$arch
#Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/xorg116/$arch

After I saved this, I ran

sudo pacman -Syy

to update the repos

2)

sudo pacman -Syuu

to downgrade to xorg 1.16
And confirmed it by running

sudo Xorg --version

3) To install the catalyst driver.

sudo pacman -S catalyst-hook catalyst-utils catalyst-libgl opencl-catalyst

During the installation it removed the included drivers.

At this point I rebooted my system and got stuck with a black screen with this message:

starting version 228
/dev/sda3: clean, 247475/7168000 file, 3247282/28649728 blocks

Re: Issues with installing proprietary AMD drivers

did you remember to disable kms?
also make sure you blacklisted radeon and don't have it in your mkinitramfs.conf and try rebuilding the initramfs.
