Looks like you posted same log twice, but there is something suspicious in it

please post your .xinitrc file .
Does X work if you wait a few minutes after boot before starting X ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

Please also describe how you are starting X.  You suggest that the second attempt is with startx - but I doubt the first one is.  Xorg is trying to run on vt7 - this is not the default behavior, so please describe what you have done differently.

vt7 is the default location for many display managers.  Are you using a DM?

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

In both attempts I'm starting X with startx as I have no login manager. My xinitrc contains just "exec startxfce4". It seems to work if I wait for a minute or so before running startx the first time. And please find below the actual second attempt

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

My xinitrc contains just "exec startxfce4".

It should contain a bit more, check https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinitrc .

If adding atleast the if-fi block doesn't help, please post dmesg or journalctl -b .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

In both attempts I'm starting X with startx

Please post the *exact* command used -- do you attach any flags?

`startx` will start on the same TTY upon which login took place (impossible with TTY7 unless you have changed NAutoVTs) unless you add "-- vt7" or so.

Please also post the content of any Xorg configuration files.

EDIT: link added

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

The exact command (after logging in in tty) is just "startx". I've added the if-fi block Lone_Wolf was talking about and it didn't change anything. The worrying thing is that it worked up until yesterday and I didn't change any configuration files for this to happen.

The exact command (after logging in in tty) is just "startx".

Just to be absolutely sure, can we see the output of `which startx`?

Try disabling the discrete card in your firmware (BIOS) options if you don't want to use it.

Otherwise, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

Please post the output of the following commands just after logging in to a tty before starting X:

uname -a
echo $XDG_VTNR
tty
which startx

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

I don't want to disable it from BIOS because I'm using it on Windows for gaming. I saw in the wiki that bbswitch is as effective as bumblebee if I just use it to disable the card.

fThe output of

uname -a
echo $XDG_VTNR
tty
which startx

is

Linux Host-001.lan 4.2.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Oct 27 08:13:28 CET 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux
1
/dev/tty1
/usr/bin/startx

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

Is this a thing on Windows 7 as well? I didn't really touch it's configuration and haven't booted it in a week (and used Arch daily since - and the issue only started yesterday).

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

Odd.  You are on tty1 running startx on tty1 - it should not try to start on tty7.  Has your startx been modified?  Heres a checksum from mine, is yours the same:

$ md5sum /usr/bin/startx
88a243284cc7b0b2c1c34f01d73cf9dd /usr/bin/startx

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

It seems to have the checksum. It hasn't been modified. I just saw something odd. If I open my terminal emulator it seems to say "paulherman@Host-001" instead of "paulherman@localhost". Is this a recent change or is it just wrong to have this? Also, before running startx the second time, it seems to say in the stdout of the first run that startxfce4 was already running.

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

That's systemd setting a hostname because you shouldn't have localhost as your hostname. You should set your hostname correctly. I don't think it is directly related to this issue, it can cause a whole slew of errors so that might still have an effect

Re: [Solved] Xorg only works on second startx

Apparently, the missing hostname was the problem. Everything seems to be working fine now. It is really odd as it worked without it for a year or so. Thanks everyone for the help.

Cool.  Be sure to edit your first post and mark the thread as solved.
