Hi,
Shouldn't we prepare for it?

Only if you buy all the developers PS3's.

Hi, there is sdk which is running on linux.
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/p … lstartsim/
Also, afaik, from 2.6.16, linux support cell.
About hardware part, if it really superior than x86, everybody will buy it, everywhere means low low price.

if everyone buys it it will be a high, high price. more demand = higher price. if no developers have ps3's then who's going to build packages for it? maybe you'd like to?
i'd wait until people start using the cell cpu in normal pc's, not in a gaming system. it'd be a waste of time and resources to build for a gaming platform that such a small percentage of people are even going to bother putting linux on - probably the only reason to do it would be for the "hack factor". you're also talking to a distro that largely focuses on x86, and doesn't even release official ISOs for any other platform.

The PS3 is going to ship with a hard drive option that includes Linux preinstalled. No idea what distro, but... 8)

then sony can manage all the "host specific" software forever?
everyone who use ps3 must have to use "sony-cerfified" game?
then i would rather check opencore, homebrewcpu, or opensparc, quantum computer ![]()

then i stay with "sony-lux" and full of sony BMG cds..

It would be an interesting system, tho. The PS3/xbox360 system specs are impressive and for ~$300+tax+accessories+games you can snag the latter. If it had more system RAM than it would be worth a shot.

It would also be totally awesome to have a cutting-edge games console that can run Linux and is therefore able to do all of the things that Linux can do. You'd have a PC and console in one! Also consider emulators. With zsnes, dgen etc. you'd be able to play all of the old console games using the PS3 controllers, which would be cool.
As much as I love Arch, and as nasty as Sony can be, I think the coolness of what I just described would be far too great for me to resist :-)

.. Arch doesn't even have an official PPC port, and you're asking them to build it for a Playstation? I don't personally think Arch needs to be "preparing" for this at all.
If, what you mean by this, is you hope to found an arch-based project for PS3 (like Archie for liveCD or Arch64 for, well, 64-bit obviously) then all the best of luck to you.

I already do this with the sweet PS2 controllers. I bought a PS2 to USB converter on liksang a while back and have been using dual-shock controller for all my PC-gaming-controller needs. Works brilliantly in Arch. ![]()

I have my ps3 running Yellow Dog Linux as of right now. I believe all you need to get linux running on a ps3 is a working kboot. I know I've installed normal Fedora Core 7 ppc binaries and it runs those fine. I'd like to have Arch on my PS3 because right now my choices are Gentoo (no ram and you want me to have to compile everything?), Ubuntu (I don't mind debian-based so much I guess), or YDL. I chose YDL because it was made for ppc and ps3. I just hate yum and rpms. Pacman is just so much easier. I've had to compile most of the things I like from source anyway because YDL doesn't make rpms for everything. I don't know about outright buying a PS3 for a dev, but I'd put $20 towards one.

Action first, talk later.
Or something like that ![]()
I need real, proper pen and paper for this.

As I said above, no Devs with PS3's = no Arch port.
There's another catch -- you also need devs that _want_ to port it.

Kind of a catch 22 situation there.. If you buy the Devs some PS3's they might not have time to port Arch as they will be quite busy playing games on their new PS3's ![]()

and they will call it "testing period" so you can't say anything, unless of course you demand a "developer preview".
will take some time for PS3 to gain momentum. still more ppl buying X360s.

Fine. I'll go ahead and try my luck at getting Archlinux PPC running on my PS3. Then I'll do a write up on the wiki if I get everything working. All packages I'll have to compile I'll submit to the AUR. Hopefully it isn't going to take too long to get it all working.

Please write up that wiki pag if you have any success. I can't find a simple, and recent, step by step guide specifically for a ps3 so I hope you had some luck and can spare the time to add some ps3 notes to the wiki.

I have the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … C_on_a_PS3) started, and progress so far is that I've gotten the ps3 booted with it's own kernel into fluxbox and I've even been able to get mplayer to play movies somewhat well.
