OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

I just upgraded to a Geforce 6200. I'm using the nvidia drivers in pacman. It seems to work well on the desktop, but I've noticed that when I'm using openGL applications like xscreensaver or Doom 3, the system will freeze randomly. Video output freezes, keyboard and mouse don't respond (so I need to do a hard reboot), but oddly, background processes seem to keep going -- I've noticed that files I was downloading made process during the frozen period.

My xorg.conf is the default result of xorgconfig + nvidia-xconfig, but I've included it below anyway.

I'm not quite sure what logs I should be checking to discern the problem, or what I should be looking for, so any hints there would be appreciated.

I've heard reports of freezing with NForce drivers. My motherboard uses NForce, but I'm not using the NForce drivers.

I understand that it could be a hardware problem, but I can't justify replacing the video card until I'm sure it's not a software problem.

A Google search for "nvrm xid" turns up a bunch of results on the problem of freezing with the nvidia drivers. There are a lot of reports at

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=24703.

I'm interested to here if any Arch users have encountered this problem. People are suggesting it's an nvidia driver bug.

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

ive been having this only with the latest one (on a 6600gt). I'm going to downgrade and see if it occurs with the older one.

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

Glad to hear I'm not the only one having this problem. I've read the wiki on downgrading but I'm not sure what's the best way for this package. Do you have a pkgbuild that references the older version or something?

Having this problem also, but only when running with kernel26beyond-2.6.16.beyond2-1
If I boot with kernel26-2.6.16.4-1 the problem doesn't occur. both using the latest nvidia driver.

I also have this problem with a Geforce Ti4600 and 1.0.8178-16. Sometimes, it will freeze 2-3 times a week...

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

this is a different issue paul2lv. This is anytime that any direct rendering is used, glxgears, screensaver, whatever, there is a complete X lock. Not a random occasional lock.

it is not a system lock as everything else seem to continue running.

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

For the record I have the problem with kernel26-2.6.16.4-1 and the latest nvidia driver. I don't use the beyond kernel.

iphitus, just so we're on the same page -- your lock isn't instantaneous, right? Mine locks up after some variable amount of time, ranging from about a minute to an hour.

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

Has anyone tried the nvidia driver currently in the testing repo?

If anyone could post instructions on the best way to revert to the stable driver that came before 1.0.8178-16, that would be a great help.

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

mine is pretty much instantaneous, when anything uses GL. glxgears, xscreensaver previews, quake4.

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

Mine is instant. If I try to use any opengl app it freezes instantly. If I leave desktop and xscreensaver tried to activate it freezes.

I can use all opengl apps with arch kernel with no problems. I am using default config for arch kernel and beyond kernel. Same nvidia drivers also. My card is a 6600gt.

Is it on beyond only? hmm

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

Is anyone else getting similar NVRM: xid errors to what I posted above? I find them in everything.log at the time the display froze.

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

Here are two possible fixes I found in the ubuntu forums. Neither worked for me but others might want to try:

- add the following to your xorg.conf device section (will slow down some X stuff like window resizing though)

Option "RenderAccel" "false"

- disable "APIC" option in your bios setup

Mine is on beyond only. btw, on beyond kernel I am using fbsplash and am not on other kernel.

edit: just upgraded to testing nvidia ver 1.0.8756-1 and so far, I can run opengl apps using beyond kernel.

Re: OpenGL apps freeze system GeForce 6200 & nvidia drivers

I regret to inform you guys that my problem wasn't software-related. Turns out it was either an underpowered PSU or bad video card. Shame on me for pointing the finger at software after a system upgrade

I guess this thread wasn't a total waste though since others seem to be having a legitimate problem.

For  reference, I'm now using nvidia 1.0.8756-1 (from testing repo) and a 7300 GS on the latest vanilla kernel. I need the testing drivers because they're the first to support the 7-series. Somehow this seems to be running stable.

I hope the software freezing problem gets sorted out. If any of you haven't tried so far, try out all the nvidia drivers available in pacman (including legacy and testing).
