Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I confirm the system can shut down normally under wayland, but doesn't work under x.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

It seems, no one could find any solution so far. I regularly, shutdown my computer using 'sync && poweroff -f'; 'sync && reboot -f' doesn't work too.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

@mekitron, this is not the best way to do so because sometimes disks aren't fully synced. better way to shutdown or reboot from tty instead of DE

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

@dviktor: Thank you very much for the suggestion.

As I was busy so didn't dare to mess around with computer. Today, I just disabled gdm.service and installed sddm as display manager; since then problem is gone. However, I have found something new; GDM never provided me chocies to run Gnome Classic or Wayland sessions, where SDDM does so.

Now SDDM installation gave me two new problems.

1. I have to unlock keyring each time I run a session (Gnome, GnomeClassic, or Wayland).
2. Lock icon is gone, so I am unable to lock the system.

These all things seem interesting to me. smile

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

The problem has gone when I switched to the 4.1.16-1-lts kernel. Now reboot and shutdown performs clean and no disk corruption happens
EDIT: kernel 4.4.1-1 also solves problem

Are you using GDM? If so move to an other DM.

I just don't get, why no one is taking this issue seriously? Or maybe, no one wants to tell newbies that they are screwing their installations.

Disable GDM and use any other DM. SDDM will work like a charm. Try it and get back here.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I started using lightdm (as opposed to no DM) and the issue is gone.

Previously, I was starting X from bash_profile, that is, it was run by my user. Now, it is run as root. Maybe this is somehow related?

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

Migrated to lightdm and the problem disappeared. I can shutdown normally now. So is the problem related to gdm? But the last update of gdm i got was 11.2015:

% grep gdm /var/log/pacman.log
....
[2015-11-18 13:28] [ALPM] upgraded gdm (3.18.0-1 -> 3.18.2-1)

and I dont have the shutdown problem for such a long time..definitly not since last year..

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I am having this problem as well.
Running job login manager which starts with 90 seconds, then goes to 3 minutes, 4 minutes etc...

I am using just i3 without DE or login manager. Kernel 4.4.1-2

Are you running Xorg as root or as your user? If it is as your user, try running it as root (if you can do it without using a login manager, it would be more interesting).

Apparently, the problem disappears when using certain login managers or when closing X before shutting down. Using a login manager will almost certainly run X as root.
This would not explain why GDM has the issue as well, though. But this may help someone to better investigate the issue, since so far we (at least I) have very little idea of what is causing it.

If I exit i3 before shutting down, it works.

If i log in as root and then startx, on shutting down problem persist.

What's my best option here until it gets fixed? I don't want to install login manager because I already have everything automated to log me in and startx.

Try to downgrade kernel?

Also, just noticed I wrote wrong message in first post, it's more something like "A stop job is running for login service"

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

@Alcatraz

Maybe you can find a CLI login manager that calls ~/.bash_profile. Lightdm calls ~/.xprofile before your window manager, so it shouldn't be too complicated for you to configure it.
I understand it is annoying, but it is better than turning off by holding the power button.

I went ahead and installed lightDM. Problem "solved". I guess it can work until problem gets fixed.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

It may sound strange but installing xf86-video-amdgpu package solved my shutdown problem for good.

I am using kernel 4.4.1-2-ARCH and gnome desktop started with gdm. My device is a HP envy 4 laptop with an Intel graphic card and an AMD 8750M card. I have installed both xf86-video-intel and xf86-video-ati packages but I never use the AMD card explicitly.

I had the same problem when trying to shut down the system after I have launched gdm. But installing package "xf86-video-amdgpu" just gets shutdown/reboot back to work. This doesn't make sense for me because as mentioned in the wiki page, this package is only for latest AMD Radeon graphics cards of Volcanic Islands and  Sea Islands family while my AMD card belongs to Solar System family.

Hopefully this works for you as well.
