Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

Hello.

Recently i have been getting hangs when rebooting/shutting down.

I have just reinstalled Arch, but the problem is still happening.

When i poweroff or reboot, units seem to shutdown as normal until it hangs on.

A stop job is running for logind.service

This hangs forever unless i ctrl+d/ctrl+c. That makes it wait for about a minute or so, and then says that it failed. After that, all of the remaining units shutdown normally, but when it gets to the end it says something along the lines of:

Shutdown failed. Ignored

That is not the exact error, but it is something similar to that.

After that happens, it still hangs, nothing i do can get me out of it other than manually holding the power button for 5 seconds.

Some errors in my log that seem related are:

Jan 03 21:37:49 sea systemd[1]: systemd-logind.service: Processes still around after SIGKILL. Ignoring.
Jan 03 21:39:19 sea systemd[1]: systemd-logind.service: State 'stop-final-sigterm' timed out. Killing.
Jan 03 21:39:40 sea kernel: INFO: task systemd-logind:352 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
Jan 03 21:39:40 sea kernel: Not tainted 4.3.3-2-ARCH #1
Jan 03 21:39:40 sea kernel: "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.

This problem is really making things hard for me, and I am unsure of what i should do. I would seriously appreciate anyone's help. If any more information could be useful, please let me know.

Sorry, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that.

I use zsh, but i don't know what about it could be causing this.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I'm having the same issue, systemd-logind seems to be causing my system to hang when shutting down or rebooting. After doing a little testing, it seems the issue only occurs when I log into a standard gnome-shell session from gdm. Disabling gdm and booting into a TTY allows the system to shut down properly. In addition, logging into a Wayland gnome-shell session also allows the system to shut down properly.

I don't use Gnome, although that is strange how that fix worked out for you.

I'm kind of losing hope, this is still happening, and i just don't know how to fix it.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I'm having the same issue. I use gnome without GDM. I log into a TTY and type startx.  The strange thing is: It only happens on my laptop, not my desktop, and the two installations are nearly identical.

I'm on a laptop too.

One thing i should clarify is that I'm just running a minimal installation, both of the times i reinstalled. I3wm, zsh, and around 500 packages.

I really wonder what in particular could be making the shutdown fail. I'm looking at some older threads to see the problems they have in common, but so far I'm not seeing much.

I saw in another thread someone mentioned they thought it could be video card related. I don't know how, but here is my output of lspci

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0b)

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I have 2:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)

My journalctl shows the following for the previous boot, although the radeon errors - VCE init error (-110) - have been there since I can remember:

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

Seems like I'm experiencing the same problem: when I'm trying to shutdown or reboot laptop from XFCE menu "A stop job is running for Login Service..." appears. If I first log out XFCE session and then manually shutdown all seems good

Kernel 4.3.3-2

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

This seems hot issue of Jan.2016. I am also encountering same problem and trying to solve it. I have no problem while booting the OS but when it comes to shutdown. All same errors appear and nothing works at all.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

The best "solution" I could find was logging out, then logging in as root and calling `poweroff -f` (suggested here).

I'm using a laptop with one AMD and one Intel video card, but the AMD card should be deactivated.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

It is working for both Gnome on Wayland and Cinnamon on LightDM. Not working for Gnome on GDM or Cinnamon on GDM. Probably the issue is with GDM and Xserver. So I have switched to LightDM from GDM and now it is working fine.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

kinda strange but I'm also having problem, I don't use any loginDM. use xfce4 with compiz, only way I could shutdown properly is to logoff xfce then $ shutdown now

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

The same issue here
I don't use any login managers, X started after logging in through tty1 and XFCE runs. As I understood, the problem is related to the unmount process

I have Intel + AMD configuration but IMHO this is not an issue because it appeared after update (package list from unholy update)

Logging in as root is a bad idea. Better way to manually shutdown/reboot from tty2, for example.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

Are you using some login manager or starting DE via .xinitrc?

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I also got it with my gnome 3.18 and starting with GDM, the only way to turn off the pc is with sudo poweroff -f as stated by here, and no way to restart if there is not a tty with shutdown - r now

In addition to the above kernel 4.2.5-1 there was no problem shutdown and restart.-

This isn't right. This isn't even wrong.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I think this is a bug introduced with 4.3.3-2 kernel. Has anybody filed a bugreport already?

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I'm experiencing this problem.

They way i normally shutdown or reboot is just typing

poweroff

or

reboot

No desktop environment or login manager, just running x and i3 window manager.

I'm using a laptop with one AMD and one Intel video card, but the AMD card should be deactivated.

A workaround that works for me most of the time is terminating X (usually by exiting through the window manager) and then powering off from the TTY. However, there have been times where i receive the output

Xorg refused to die

, which will make powering off from TTY impossible, and i receive the same logind.service stop job problem as i would with powering off in X.

I also have Hybrid graphics Intel/AMD. I doubt it's relevant to the problem, i just found it strange that quite a few people experiencing the problem in the thread also have Intel/AMD.

I don't think it is necessarily a DE or XFCE problem. There's a few people reporting that they are experiencing it from gnome, and others reporting that they experience it from just window managers.

I would have thought it could happen to anyone in X, especially considering a couple of earlier posts in the the thread saying that the problem went away for them when using Wayland. I lack knowledge when it comes to Wayland so i might be mistaken, but i think it's mostly used without X server?

Also, when you experience the problem, does your error specify login service or logind service?

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

I think that this bug is related to the kernel 4.3.3-2 so I've filed corresponding report. It's worth for everyone who experiencing this bug to confirm it on bugzilla

Personally I have error message with Login Service string

I think, it is systemd problem because we can turn off laptops using sync && shutdown -f

I don't think so as I'm having this problem with the LTS kernel 4.1.15-1.

Re: Shutdown/Reboot infinite hanging

here is the full list of package changes. As I noticed the problem appeared after this updates/removals. The only suspicious package is p11-kit.
