gtk-gnutella being very sluggish

I've found that gtk-gnutella is an excellent client, despite its ugliness, but it's very, very sluggish and unresponsive - almost as bad as Frostwire or Azureus, with very high widget redraw times - more than a second sometimes. Here's the console output:

FWIW, "" indicates a (single) symbol not supported by the en_US UTF8 locale. In the terminal, such symbols are indicated by a solid black circle containing a question mark.
