Intel HD 3000 (i915) issues (freezes).

Hello.

I face some problems with my Intel HD 3000 (i915) GPU.

Mainly

[drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=1059075 end=1059076)
[Jan 4 17:25] [drm] stuck on render ring
[ +0.000605] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 6:0:0x87e8effd, in kwin [20369], reason: Ring hung, action: reset
[ +0.001867] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang
[Jan 4 17:35] [drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=1159454 end=1159455)
[Jan 4 17:39] [drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=1174633 end=1174634)

This will result in a 5~10 second screen freeze (I can hear sound playing). The mouse pointer is moving in most cases. This will occur with 3D programs (e.g. KiCAD 3D viewer).

And a more severe problem that lead to an extensive screen freeze for about 5 minutes. The following problem manifest it self when for example I watch a movie with vlc and fast forward it.

I have tested both SNA and UXA. There is no change it the presence of the fault.

I have also tested

Option     "SwapbuffersWait" "false"

I can;t exactly pin point when the problem it started. The last couple of months?

Any suggestions? Should I fill another upstream kernel bug report?

I assume you added the kernel boot lines in an attempt to fix?  Does it error out without them and without the /etc/X11/*conf?

Semaphores is known to causes freezes. Wouldn't be suprised if DRI3 was the culprit also. For me VDPAU caused freezing personally.

Semaphores an DRI 3 was an attempt to address the issue.

Hi Firewalker. Have you found a solution for this already? I seem to have the same problem but have no clue whatsoever about what to do next...

No, no solution.  I filled a bug report to the Linux kernel.

Re: Intel HD 3000 (i915) issues (freezes).

So this is what i did (this might not be a solution but at least the freezing is now gone for me):

I switched to both the zen and lts kernels for some testing but experienced the freezing too. So after digging for a while in forums I decided to disable the automatic core dumps based on /etc/systemd/coredump.conf.d/custom.conf, which are considered to impact performance and security according to the arch wiki.

I removed redshift and disabled bluetooth, which were displaying some errors in my logs.

I did a system update to see if some updates could make a difference. After that I worked with heavy loads for some hours on my arch system including running a virtual machine on Virtualbox and installing software at the same time. No issues right now. If something changes I will report it here, but this seems to be happening with 4.* Kernel users.
