XGL

Hii, I have some questions about XGL, Can I use it with KDE ?
and, How can I use it after I have install it from shadowhand respo
?

At the moment it lets you run Gnome, or xfce4 , I'd suggest you check it out with xfce4-svn , also in the shadowhand's repo ... after you install it just exit out of xorg, then instead of startx , do a startxgl --help .. that should get you going

Some people have managed to run XGL/Compiz on KDE, so yes, there should be a way, but I don't know how. Some guy at www.kde-look.org showed off some vides of KDE 3.5.2 running Compiz in the forums, maybe you could ask him.

Also, the kororaa live-CD lets you run XGL with both gnome and KDE. They're even running it on updated i810-drivers, so that XGL flies with an onboard intel graphics chip

Yeah, it sure does. You probably hear this often enough, but I really must say that your patch set kicks ass!

its possible to run any wm in xgl. you just won't get the cool effects that compiz has. but don't bother trying e17 with the opengl stuff enabled. It will just crash.

I hacked up shadowhand's (or did mikos write that?) script to make it launch KDE, the only thing you really need to do is go into the taskbar's properties and select 'show applications from all desktops', or something like that, or you won't be able to use your taskbar (do this BEFORE launching XGL, this option disappears if you try to set it using XGL, for some odd reason)

I've been running it for a few days now, pretty stable too, and I do get all of the cool effects (or else, why bother?)

I can clean up the script and post it if anyone is interested, but its not really that advanced, but then again, I'm starting to get used to rewriting stuff...

the easiest way getting XGL to work by far was when i tried it on ubuntu (i had to see what all the rage was about with this thing...well dapper's been the most unstable distro i've tried in a long time, mostly X related stuff).

anyways, don't know if this would apply for arch, pretty sure it does...

back to the point.
ln -sf /usr/bin/Xgl /etc/X11/X

and then in ~/.gnomerc you all in all the compiz stuff (or in this case a .kderc similar type file).  works like a charm.  no need to modify gdm or any of that stuff.  when you wanna go back to regular X, just relink /etc/X11/X.
