Edit: Downgrading qt5-base to 5.5.1-7 'solved' this. See post #8.
My entire system decided to start freezing today. Not just the Plasma desktop. Can't get to a tty or do anything but power off.
I'm seeing these lines that may be relevant in the journal:

But the boot continues, I login, startx to start Plasma, open some applications, then at some point when I click on the application menu to start something else, everything locks up.

I also am using nouveau, including the firmware blob AUR:nouveau-fw, and startx rootless into Plasma 5 and experienced just the same coredump following today's updates; not only, but first of ksplashqml. I still can use Plasma, though, while avoiding to click on anything like Application Starter or Systray Menu, using krunner for apps and dolphin for devices only, else plasmashell will crash, not managing to restart itself. I still can control mouse and use ALT+TAB+DEL for logout from the Xsession, to startx again. So it's not the kernel panicking – but one of the crashes I experienced today must've been serious, since my tower machine rebooted itself instantaneous.
edit: I think, these might be the updates in question.

It is definitely that update that did it in.
Also, the proprietary driver works fine but nouveau doesn't like that recent update.

A few minutes after starting KDE the system does not respond to any given input. "top" shows maximum CPU load. Downgrading the packages temporarily did the trick. I put those filthy packages in the IgnorePkg Section of pacman.conf.
I live a life in fear and misery ever since.

Well, it's a Rolling Release Distribution, isn't it? Seems like my used mirror is lagging behind the one ronw is using. Today I got updates getting me to the same patch status as ronw posted. Especially kdebase-runtime seems to fit now.

Now everything is working like before; with some weird behaviour of kactivitymanger (just coredumped again while logging out) and annoying log messages of kscreen, flooding my journal up to every 10 seconds. But these annoyances don't break usability that much, are widely observed and partly known, see –> https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=355928
As for nouveau, I personally suspect my graphics hardware to be the culprit, since it's a low budget one (Geforce 9500 GS). I don't know for sure, though.
Still missing some explanation for ronw's experience. Did logging out and startx again help in any way, or is Plasma 5 now abandoned by you, in favor for LXQT?

Many, many reboots, but I haven't given up on Plasma yet. After work I removed all the KDE and Plasma bits I could find, deleted things out of .cache, .config, and completely removed .kde and .local. Re-installed Plasma and KDE, and the system freezes very soon after startx.
I did not uninstall Qt bits (logged in to LXQt after all), but will look at the packages you mentioned.

Okay, I've to update my previous message. I can't startx Plasma 5 any longer, not even showing its splash screen any more while freezing. I only can REISUB my machine. Last thing I did was changing the OpenGL 2.0 backend settings from GLX back to EGL, as was standard before the recent hassle.
I got several other machines laying around, so I still can communicate to you guys.

The patch applied for qt5 5.5.1-7 -> 5.5.1-8 fixes a bug with nvidia proprietary driver, but breaks now nouveau.
I downgraded qt5 hoping a fix will come soon.

Downgraded qt5-base to 5.5.1-7 and no freezes. Thanks berbae!

Unhappily downgrading only qt5 was not enough for me; I downgraded also xorg-server, but still it was not enough.
I have crashes of xorg.
I tried then to go to linux-lts kernel and nvidia-304xx-lts, but still xorg crashed again, for example when using chromium or when the xscreensaver was running.
I had no crashes before monday january 11th.
So I am somewhat out of way now: nouveau is broken and seemingly nvidia-304xx too even with linux-lts...
What can I do?
Offline
Thanks to all in this thread for finding the cause of the crashes.
I filed a bug report:

berbae, do you mean that downgrading only qt5-base to 5.5.1-7 did not fix it for you?
It works for me.
Offline
Yes that's what I mean.
I cannot come back to a stable graphical system, using either nouveau or nvidia-304xx with linux or linux-lts kernel even after downgrading xorg-server and qt5.
Presently I try to use again an up-to-date system but still with linux-lts and nvidia-304xx-lts; and I try avoiding chromium, returning to firefox.
It's a very unpleasant experience to me.
I don't like to not be able to choose what I want to use and be constrained to use what I don't want.
I precise I use openbox but with some kde applis, like konsole; xscreensaver seems impacted too.
I don't like to downgrade packages.

Downgrading qt5-base to 5.5.1-7 does the trick for me.
Looking at https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/47728 and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1594907 the applied patch in qt5-base 5.5.1-8 seems to be a quick fix for implementing an upcoming nvidia-361.16 driver version, so downgrading the package for nouveau (and intel, seemingly) users seems to be save right now.
So berbae, your issue must've another cause. Aren't you overengineering a bit?

Does the patched qt5 impact also the nvidia legacy 304 driver?
For now I don't understand what happens on my desktop computer.
Yesterday xorg completely freezed the machine when in linux-lts and nvidia-304xx-lts as I used only firefox (gtk appli) and xterm.
I was not using any qt5 applis.
It's frustrating, I think to re-install nouveau with linux kernel and downgrading qt5, but I am almost sure that did not work when I tried it before.

Then you have a different issue and might want to look into log files and similar, and maybe open another thread since whatever problem you have isn't what is being discussed here. Might as well be your hardware that's dying...

After running another update (including some KDE/Plasma related packages), the problem got more severe. When I'm clicking on _anything_ on my control panel (doesn't matter if KMenu, some applet or a program starter), two Plasma icons appear and Plasma freezes. Can anyone here confirm this behaviour?

I guess you have updated qt5-base to version 5.5.1-8. For 5.5.1-7, use --ignore qt5-base option while updating.
Well, nevermind.
I put those filthy packages in the IgnorePkg Section of pacman.conf.

@viniciustinti
Good that downgrading qt5 works for you.
In my case, my desktop computer seems to be affected by a hardware problem.
It's a pretty unlucky occurence that it happened just at this time when there is a problem with legacy nvidia 304 driver and latest kernel, as well as an issue with nouveau and patched qt5.
But I don't see another cause to what happens to my machine.
For me, xorg crashes and often entirely freezes the system when being in these configurations:
linux kernel
nouveau
downgraded qt5
using firefox or chromium
or
linux-lts
nvidia-304xx-lts
patched qt5
using firefox or chromium
and no qt5 applis
I cannot see another explanation than a hardware problem (probably the integrated graphic card).
It's a very bad coincidence for me.
I guess I have to buy a new desktop computer with recent hardware components and start afresh my linux installation.
This should take some time before I could be in a usable arch linux installation again.
In the intervalle I can use a laptop with Windows 10 and so continue to have access to the web.

@berbae
Have you tried deleting all KDE-relevant config files/folders? After downgrading the qt-packages only temporarily did the trick, _this_ (plaus downgrading qt-packages to version 5.5.1-6 - to be on the safe side) seemed to work out for me. I am working on my machine for three hours without anything crashing/failing. The only issue is that KMail and KSysguard refuse to start - but that's OK
kmail: error while loading shared libraries: libwebp.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
ksysguard: error while loading shared libraries: libwebp.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

@berbae: With only Xorg freezing/crashing, I would guess it's graphics or memory related. With some vaulty capacitors on the mainboard for example, the failure would be more severe, with my experience leading to sudden reboots. Check entire hardware, though, would be my best advice atm. If it's temperature, maybe some fan and heat sink cleansing could work like a miracle. But, we're going offtopic here.
@ Varg I veum: berbae isn't using Plasma, just some qt5 apps. Thanks for updating your experience, though.
