Thinkpad W520 - intel-virtual-output and external monitor [solved]

Hello,

ca. 2 months ago I had a working bumblebee intel-virtual-output setup. Right now I have tried to connect an external monitor again, but the monitor is not even recognized by xrandr.
There dont seem to be any error messages available.

I would be glad for any pointers.

Here is my xorg.conf.nvidia:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Layout0"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
    Option "AutoAddGPU" "false"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "DiscreteNvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"

# If the X server does not automatically detect your VGA device,
# you can manually set it here.
# To get the BusID prop, run `lspci | egrep 'VGA|3D'` and input the data
# as you see in the commented example.
# This Setting may be needed in some platforms with more than one
# nvidia card, which may confuse the proprietary driver (e.g.,
# trying to take ownership of the wrong device). Also needed on Ubuntu 13.04.
# BusID "PCI:01:00:0"

# Setting ProbeAllGpus to false prevents the new proprietary driver
# instance spawned to try to control the integrated graphics card,
# which is already being managed outside bumblebee.
# This option doesn't hurt and it is required on platforms running
# more than one nvidia graphics card with the proprietary driver.
# (E.g. Macbook Pro pre-2010 with nVidia 9400M + 9600M GT).
# If this option is not set, the new Xorg may blacken the screen and
# render it unusable (unless you have some way to run killall Xorg).
    Option "ProbeAllGpus" "false"

    Option "NoLogo" "true"
    Option "UseEDID" "true"
    Option "UseDisplayDevice" "none"
EndSection

Re: Thinkpad W520 - intel-virtual-output and external monitor [solved]

I feel your pain!

xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm
   1920x1080 60.00*+ 59.93 50.00
   1680x1050 59.95 59.88
   1600x1024 60.17
   1400x1050 59.98
   1280x1024 60.02
   1440x900 59.89
   1280x960 60.00
   1360x768 59.80 59.96
   1152x864 60.00
   1024x768 60.00
   800x600 60.32 56.25
   640x480 59.94
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I've been trying to work out the problem each night after work but whilst studying for an EMC cert, finding the time (to learn how to fix this issue) is hard.

Hopefully someone smarter will come along and save us!

I have found out that commenting out the "use display device" will fix this problem.

Re: Thinkpad W520 - intel-virtual-output and external monitor [solved]

Hello Alcasa and m3ld4r10n,

I too have a laptop with optimus. I am able to connect hdmi external monitor easily using bumblebee and intel-virtual-output setup.

However, hdmi audio is not working for me. It gives me out of range error in dmesg if I play anything via Nvidia HDMI sound card.

Does HDMI audio works for you ?

Thanks.
