Install ISO hangs on "Booting the Kernel" (Atom N280 "thin-client")

I've got an old HP thin-client system (an Atom N280 CPU, 2GB RAM, a 2GB flash-based HDD) that I want to try to turn into a little media-player box. Step one is, of course, to get a minimal Arch Linux installation onto it.

The 2015.12.01 and 2016.01.01 ISOs both do the same thing - I get the boot options menu, select the "i686" bootup, and watch it "Probe EDD" (successfully).

It then hangs at "Booting the Kernel".

Other livecd distributions seem to boot okay (I've tried GRML and SystemRescueCD, plus a recent i586 Suse "tumbleweed" ISO), and both of the Arch ISOs seem to boot fine on other (more typical) computer systems, so I'm reasonably certain there's nothing wrong with the Arch installation images.

Any hints on switches I might pass to it in order to get Arch to boot, or some way of getting more informative messages that might point me at what's causing the hangup?
