Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

Okay, ever since I've started using xorg, both the default and the LTS kernel have been panicking. I fixed half the issue by disabling 3D acceleration and fixed the whole issue by disabling hardware acceleration all together.

Unfortunately, my inner gamer has been calling me and absolutely no games work properly without acceleration except my NES games that I play with FCEUX. When looking up my GPU info online, all anything tells me is that I'm using Intel HD Graphics (how very helpful). I think it might be that I don't have the proper drivers installed. I'm using the Intel Pentium Processor j2900. I've looked at the wikipedia page for GPU and CPU counterparts but I can't find my computer. (It's an AXC-603-EB11)

I've obviously checked the wiki, and I know I need one of three choices... VA-API, VDPAU or XvMC. How do I know which one is for my computer?

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

I may be wrong, but isn't VDPAU / VA-API only for hardware accelarted video playback / encoding?

No, you're not wrong.

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

Hmm, let me recheck the wiki... If it is, then why would my kernel be panicking?

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

No idea. i915 is once again broken? (not surprising)

What do you mean by this anyway? What exactly have you done?

Btw you don't really need to look up online for what GPU are you with:

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

VA-API is for video encoding and VDPAU is "to offload portions of the video decoding process and video post-processing to the GPU video-hardware."

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

I opened up /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf and added Option "DRI" "False"

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

No, VA-API can be used for both decoding (mainly) and encoding. VA-API is from Intel. VDPAU is from NVIDIA.

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

From the VDPAU wiki page: "Intel GMA 4500 series and newer GPUs are supported by the libvdpau-va-gl package together with the libva-intel-driver package."

Didn't you say that you did something something half fixed the problem and something something full fixed the problem? So which was this? Half or Full? And what's the other something something?

I only said "from". You have tons of fusion way to use either of VDPAU/VA-API on GPUs from different vendors. And it's low time that you dig about that.

That was the full fix, surprisingly. What do you mean by "You have tons of fusion way to use either of them on GPUs of different vendors. And it's low time that you dig about that."

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

Btw there aren't much you really need to install. xf86-video-intel and mesa-libgl (which pulls mesa).

(Assuming it's really Intel, since you still haven't post your lspci, best with -k)

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

Have you been doing partial updates?

mesa is recently updated, wonder if it has anything to do with your issue.

Can you take a pic or something of the panic message?

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

Partial updates? What do you mean? How can I check? I've always done pacman -Syu. I'll update my machine and see what happens.

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

Well pacman -Syu is NOT partial update, so I guess you're clear (unless you've been using some broken mirror).

Re: Kernel panics when hardware acceleration is enabled

Okay, I think I'm good.

EDIT:
Never mind, I just remembered that I'm using a custom mirrorlist. I'll swap it for the regular one and then update...

EDIT2:
Never mind that, using the regular mirrorlist didn't update anything...
