what's up with this linspire announcement ?

I was just skipping over the latest newsletters at distrowatch when I saw this:

A guess (and not much of one) is that they've found a favorable vendor to sell Linspire preinstalled on their systems.

I think they've already had that. I thought you could buy PCs with Linspire preinstalled from Walmart.

Yep, Linspire logs you right into a root account, with X and all of KDE running... Kind of freaked out the first time I saw that.

Of course, that's not the least of it... You know about CNR? (Stands for "Click 'n' Run" - I swear I'm not kidding. ) In order to install or upgrade any software on Linspire, you must pay a subscription fee. I swear, I am not lying... Trust me, Linspire is absolute shit, and should never, ever be allowed to stay on any desktop.

Well, I never had the intention to ever try it. I was just curious on what kind of freakin' shit they've worked on for about 2 years and going to make an announcement of.
Well, maybe they'll release CNR to gpl, I remember to read somewhere it was going to be ported to ubuntu.

It wasn't to be a replacement for Synaptic/APT, but rather another option that was promoted as being possibly easier. I've never tried it so I have no comment one way or the other. But when it was announced it created a real stir.

Well, it's not easier, it's a pain in the neck, at least it was the last time I tried it... Kind of like browsing through web pages listing applications in an almost-organized fashion, with no search function. They might have improved it by now, but even if they have I can't see what it has the Synaptic doesn't...

I interviewed Kevin Carmony at LWE in Boston and he did not want to give away any clues on what this is. My guesses:
- they're selling codec lincenses to users of other distros. Currently Linspire plays almost all codecs LEGALLY. They've done this the old fashioned way. They paid for it. Maybe they're struck a deal to be the provider of legal codec lincensing for all the major distros?
- they have a major PC seller (Dell, HP, Lenovo?) to ship PC's with Linspire pre-loaded
- they're starting some kind of application development pool with other distros

I'm fishing here.

Seems like they are including codecs, fonts and some other stuff which often isn't offical supported in most free community-driven versions of commercial distributions.

Legally supports (or has one-click access to support): MP3, DVD, Windows Media, QuickTime, Java, Flash, Real, ATI drivers, nVidia drivers, Adobe Acrobat Reader, proprietary WiFi drivers, fonts, and so on.
