Gnome clock applet can't make up its mind

If my panel is set to 24 pixels wide (the default), about half the time the clock displays the time in its normal, linear fashion, with one row of characters. The other half of the time, it looks like this, with two rows (clock is highlighted):

It's not a big thing, but the way that my panel is always changing size is getting on my nerves a little... Is there a way to tell the clock to stay one way or the other?

Could it be wrapping the text when it is longer? Might try a fixed width font, or 24 hour clock.. to test it.

Just a guess.

I was  thinking the same. Or maybe it'll work moving the sound applet, tray and clock a bit more left too?

That is exactly what it is doing, but it only has about a 1/2 chance of doing it - and at 24 pixels it shouldn't wrap at all. To tell the truth I'd prefer if it didn't, wrapping makes it kind of crowded...

get it so that it's on one line, like you want it.  then right click on it, and choose "Lock To Panel", so that it gets locked in that position.  It's wrapping 'cuz it shifting size in the panel to give more room for your window list (at least, that's how it seems to me...)

Unfortunately that doesn't work either... Locking it just makes it unmovable, the wrapping still occurs when it shouldn't.

My window list is at a fixed size.

(For what it's worth I already had it locked in the first place, because if you don't lock the entries on a panel that isn't fully expanded, Gnome will randomly rearange them next time you start it. roll )
