Catfish doesn't work when started from the desktop environment

When I start catfish from the desktop environment and execute a search, nothing happens.  It doesn't attempt a search at all.

If I start catfish from a terminal window by typing catfish and execute a search, the program performs as expected.

Can anyone offer any assistance or thoughts on this?

You could check the .desktop file for the actual command it executes, i.e. the options that are used.

So my guess was wrong.
Possibly the program lacks some environmental variable, though I can't really imagine why this should be a problem.

Most probably I can't help you, but it might help others to know which DE you are using and what is the exact way you "start catfish from the desktop environment".

I am using XFCE and I am starting catfish by clicking on the program menu, finding the catfish menu item and then left clicking on that menu item to start the program.

Sorry, I'm confused...
Correct me if I'm wrong:

You can open 'catfish' even from menu or from terminal.
But you cannot search your files if you open it from the menu.
When you open it from terminal, you can find your files.

Correct?

I do also use XFCE, so I just tried and had no issues.
You could check if the problem persists with a newly to be created user.
If not, you could selectively copy over stuff from ~/.config{,/xfce4}.

Alternatively you could also use a different DE or WM or simply another method to start a program, such as xfce4-appfinder, to narrow down the issue.
