Hi,
I want to use plank dock in awesome wm, and have encountered a black background problem. Here are some of the system configuration.
awesome wm 3.5.8-1
compton-git 0.1_beta2.82
plank 0.10.1-2
plank-config 1.3.1-1
gtk+ 3.18.7
cairo 1.14.6
The X11 video driver is xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+519 and graphic uses Intel Celeron CPU J1900.
It seems that compton works well with other applications (i.e. xterm, conky) to support the transparency, but got no luck with plank and other docks such as awn and cairo-dock. There will always be a black background as shown below. Please give me some suggestions/hints to debug and solve the problem. Thanks.

Try running compton with these options
compton --backend glx --paint-on-overlay --vsync opengl-mswc

Hmm... I'm out of ideas
How about you try this https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/compton/ instead of git version?

reaper,
I partially solved the problem by changing from default backend xrender to glx. If you have problem with it, please check:
the graphic driver is installed correctly with opengl enabled.
XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS is not set. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=177789

Is plank listed under the shadow-exlude bit in your compton.conf file? It could be that compton is trying to draw shadows for plank, which I haven't been able to get to work properly so I ended up just disabling shadows for it.
