Firefox 44 crashes after "open with other application"

Hi,

since I installed FF44 I am experiencing the following problem:
when I click on a file and then select to open it with another application,
FF crashes and exits. After I launch it again I have to say that it reopens the
previous tabs without saying "oops.." so the exit seems to be safe.
If I launch FF from the terminal, I only get a SegFault error without any other message.
I would like to add that I tried with a new profile but the problem persists.
I am using XFCE, I don't know wether this is relevant or not.

Re: Firefox 44 crashes after "open with other application"

I actually have seen the same thing, trying to open PDF-Files in an external viewer. Since I don't do this that much I can't say for sure if it happened every time, but I have seen several crashes like this.

My System: Dell XPS 13 | i7-7560U | 16GB RAM | 512GB SSD | FHD Screen | Arch Linux
My Workstation/Server: Supermicro X11SSZ-F | Xeon E3-1245 v6 | 64GB RAM | 1TB SSD Raid 1 + 6TB HDD ZFS Raid Z1 | Proxmox VE

I am pretty sure that this behavior started after the introduction of GTK3, and it happens to me not only on pdf files but on every files that I want to open with a different application.
Could you tell me what kind of DE you use?

Re: Firefox 44 crashes after "open with other application"

Confirmed.
It also crashes on the nightly builds from mozilla (they use gtk3).
Time to switch to the good old gtk2 firefox.

Very nice!
Given that you experience this problem also in a more recent version,
what would be your advice? Should I compile FF myself using gtk2 instead of gtk3?

I also didn't manage to find any bug report on this problem on Mozilla,
do you think it is worth to file one?

If you dont need gtk3, i suggest you to use a gtk2 Firefox...
Also, make the devs aware of the issue is definitely good.

Re: Firefox 44 crashes after "open with other application"

Same issue for me since FF 44 (official arch repo package). Both on Gnome 3 and XFCE.

When changing the "open with" application my whole desktop freezes, takes about half a minute for Firefox to finally crash on it's own.

At least it does manage to change the application before crashing!

Re: Firefox 44 crashes after "open with other application"

I'm seeing the same behavior. Click on download, select a different application to open the file, crash shortly after selecting the application. After restarting all tabs are opened an the previously selected application to open the file is still selected.
Happens to me for many releases now and also with Nightly. Arch's stable build does not enable crash reporting (why is that the case?), but I reported it in the Nightly version.

Running firefox in GDB showed that the crash seems to be in g_type_check_instance:
Thread 1 "firefox" received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x00007ffff38efdc9 in g_type_check_instance ()
   from /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0

And also this warning right when I open the application selection: Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to set text 'Hilfsanwendung w\xe4hlen' from markup due to error parsing markup: Fehler in Zeile 1, Zeichen 30: Ungültiger UTF-8-kodierter Text im Namen - »Hilfsanwendung w\xe4hlen« ist nicht gültig
My system is german and I suspect that could be part the problem. Tried it with english: the warning disappears, but the crash does not
