xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/user/.Xauthority
I am trying to generate my xauthority file with 'xauth generate :0 . trusted' and I get the above error in return. The initial error I'm trying to resolve is when I do 'startx' I get the above answer again. So my solution to my problem is being blocked by my problem. Are there any alternatives to generating an Xauthority file?

try deleting/renaming the current file and trying again.

sudo rm /home/user/.Xauthority
xauth generate :0 . trusted
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/user/.Xauthority
same error again.

I have the exact same problem as the OP.
I renamed .Xauthority
then run
xauth generate :0 . trusted
I get
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/user/.Xauthority
