[SOLVED] Display issues on laptop since last kernel update

Hello everyone,

I run into some serious display issues since I updated to linux 4.4.1-2. It seems these issues happens when I'm using Neovim in Tmux, but I couldn't try more because after some moment it goes so serious, I have to shut down the laptop.
The issue I'm encountering is the display sometimes sliding to the left, after a moment it flickers and it does a lot of weird things. At some moment, at the end, I have a full black screen with just a vertical line of characters on the left. Then, I'm obliged to shut the computer down.
Well, the issue is quite complicated to describe.

To illustrate, this is a kind of issue that can happen:

For the moment, I downgraded the kernel to linux 4.2.5-1 which is more stable and has not this issue.

My laptop is a Thinkpad T450s and I'm using GNOME

Do you have an idea how to fix the issue related to linux 4.4.1-2,? Is anyone having the same issue?

If downgrading the kernel fixes the problem, I can only see a bug in the kernel. Which graphic card do you use? Do you use a proprietary (with possibly a proprietary module) driver? Note that Archlinux also ship the linux-lts kernel. This may be a solution because it integrates well with the system (I mean you have an arch package for all the kernel dependent software that arch provides like for example virtualbox).

Re: [SOLVED] Display issues on laptop since last kernel update

Thank you for your answer olive. I got an Intel HD Graphics 5500 (Broadwell GT2) and have installed no proprietary driver as I know. I checked the Arch Wiki concerning graphics and in fact, I don't even have the xf86-video-intel package installed, maybe should I? Then, why was it working fine without?

Do you have resources talking about this linux-lts? The Arch Wiki page about kernels doesn't say much about it and I would like to inform myself before changing an important part of my system.

Have you installed and configured the Intel Microcode package? I've seen a few people having issues lately.

I think I know enough to know I don't know enough.

Thank you Silkworm205 for your reply, but no I didn't install the Intel Microcode. The problem doesn't seem to rely here hmm

Alright, it seems the problem has been fixed after installing the xf86-video-intel package. I waited a little bit before updating this post, but now I would say this missing package was the problem.
It would still be interesting to understand why it was working with previous kernels.
