Re: Gimmick?

My guess is it has something to do with the decision to release ISO's every quarter instead of every year.  You know, especially since pacman -Syu brings you up to date.

There are really good reasons to have more frequent releases of course, but it also doesn't hurt that when you have a release you get press from.. distrowatch, osnews, slashdot, etc. which in turn makes people think the distro is very active.

The distro IS very active of course which means that the first quarterly release may be in the eyes of the code-namer, well, a gimmick to drive up usage of Arch.

Pure speculation though so don't flame me. smile

Re: Gimmick?

Sounds like Judd picked it without any dev discussion. They usually have a freeforall of random names and there's some sort of agreement on one and thats it. No reason. ;-)

Re: Gimmick?

Bah! It's a rubbish name! We need something with pizazz, like Rambunctious Rhinoceros, Serendipitious Salamander, or Melancholy Marmoset! Now those are good names!

Re: Gimmick?

we should start using byzantine versioning schemes a new one for each release

7.2 beta 3 RC 1 alpha 4
build 3287 preview 3.26 test release 1
8.4.29.05.1-b6

and so on thus preventing any one from being able to tell which is the latest version but giving us all something to do in the form of seeing who can come up with the biggest string.

Re: Gimmick?

We should name releases after characters from really stupid movies. You know, 0.7.2 Bo Duke, etc... Just like Debian. And we should also keep out mainline packages three years out of date, and fill the Testing repo with a mixture of CVS packages and outdated crap like XFree86 4.3! wink

Re: Gimmick?

Actually I think the name is pretty cool.

It just seems like 0.7.1 just came out.  I mean, is there going to be any big changes, besides xorg7?

Well, udev was on 0.7.1.

What are we waiting for for 0.8?

I think "gimmick" is a very clever and apt name - kudos (I hate that word but it's appropriate) to whoever came up with it

Re: Gimmick?

IMO the name was chosen also because Judd might think that Arch Linux CDs will end as a gimmick in a few Linux Magazines.
This will probably help to spread Arch (and leads to more posts in the Newbie corner).

I prefer crunchy frog ;-P

edit1: typos

Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch. smile

Re: Gimmick?

Personally I liked Wombat the most as a name. Why not go for more ozzy amimals. How many ozzy specific creatures are there? Kiwi, Dingo and Kangaroo are the only ones I can think of right now.
