Installed Arch as UEFI on a BIOS system

I have an old laptop that I wanted to throw Arch on. I went through the whole installation installing as if it was a UEFI system (I'm honestly not even 100% sure that this is the issue, it's just the only thing I can think of). Obviously my own fault due to my ignorance and laziness to actually check beforehand. Now when I boot it up only 2 options show up.. EFI Default Loader and Reboot Into Firmware Interface. Selecting EFI Default Loader does nothing, and then Firmware Interface opens up the BIOS. I figured I could try to boot back into the Arch CD and reinstall it properly, but there is no option to boot from CD/DVD or even from a USB. My only boot options are Linux Boot Manager or UEFI OS. Both of which do nothing when selected and it only boots back to the BIOS. If I try to launch the EFI shell the screen flashes and comes back with a "Not Found" warning.

I've done a little searching around but couldn't find any articles or posts that help. What are my options, if any? The laptop is my old ASUS X551M.

Thanks

Re: Installed Arch as UEFI on a BIOS system

You didn't create a configuration file, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … ot_entries

Use your firmware ("BIOS") menus to delete the "Linux Boot Manager" NVRAM entry then boot the Arch live ISO image and re-install system-boot and create the configuration file(s).

EDIT: You should probably change the thread title -- you must be booting in UEFI mode or you wouldn't see that menu or the options in your firmware ("BIOS").

I deleted the "Linux Boot Manager" entry, but it still boots up with the same menu with "EFI Default Loader" and "Reboot into Firmware Interface".

Re: Installed Arch as UEFI on a BIOS system

If your firmware will not allow you to boot a live USB stick then it is defective.

Are you sure there are no options in your firmware ("BIOS") boot menu to boot from the USB stick if it is plugged in when you boot?

Try selecting "EFI Default Loader" with an Arch live USB stick plugged in.

Re: Installed Arch as UEFI on a BIOS system

Well I'm booting from a DVD. I'll try a live USB stick and report back.

Re: Installed Arch as UEFI on a BIOS system

Okay after inserting the live USB I got a bunch of options to boot, even the CD/DVD option came back. Should I reinstall Arch as BIOS rather than UEFI? I apologize for the newbie questions, I've installed Arch on a VM before and never ran into issues.

Re: Installed Arch as UEFI on a BIOS system

You're welcome smile

I am very relieved, I thought maybe I had bricked your laptop for a moment there...

Please add [SOLVED] to the thread title for the benefit of others.
