Can you be more precise? I don't understand what you mean by "mask a package".

Re: Mask a package, is it possible?

In Gentoo terms it means, "when you don't want to take a certain package or a specific version of a package into account". Using /etc/pacman.conf you can add a package to the "HoldPkg" line and it will not be changed from the installed version.

That is .......... wrooong. Please read the pacman manpage and compare the descriptions of HoldPkg and IgnorePkg.

Re: Mask a package, is it possible?

Yeah, thanks. I meant "IgnorePkg = <package>". HoldPkg will prompt pacman to ask for confirmation before removing a package.

Nah you can't mask a specific version. What result are you trying to end up with? We might be able to help you figure out a better way.

Re: Mask a package, is it possible?

i've installed opera 9.0 beta from binary and now i would stop to update opera until the 9.0 will come out on the official repository smile

Anyway it's not a problem now, i've masked opera, and when it will come out, i'll comment the line smile

Re: Mask a package, is it possible?

Provided that packages are named and versioned correctly, pacman should recognise that 9.0 is newer than the repo version and not update it. Here is a line I get from my pacman:

:: gmpc: local (0.13.0-2) appears to be newer than repo (extra/0.13.0-1)

Re: Mask a package, is it possible?

Why did you do that? we have an opera-devel in AUR which is a weekly package, i know i haven't update it the last week but i will do now, Install that version instead!!

Re: Mask a package, is it possible?

Then pacman has no chance to notice it. Instead of installing teh binary, you could use ABS, edit the PKGBUILD, and use it to install 9.0 beta.
