vmplayer 12.1 and VMWare Tools for Windows

Hello folks,

I am struggling with the installation of VMWare Tools on an arch host with windows 7 guest.

Wiki suggests 1) run vmplayer as root and run installer from inside player, or 2) user #vmware-installer --install-component= from command line

Both methods were attempted, and failed.
In reverse order:

2) There are no errors on the command line, but after the "installation" running vmplayer still throws up a dialog saying that tools are outdated. Also, just as a note, this methods seems like it shouldn't work anyway (at least I think this, but maybe I am ignorant) because:

  • VMWare tools must be installed once the virtual machine is started and windows desktop loads

  • This suggests that the tools install is somehow tied to virtual machines individually

  • using the vmware-installer command there is no option to specify a particular virtual machine, so I assume this is why starting the machine from player does not detect any change after installation

In any case, even though vmware-installer runs with no problems, the virtual machine does not see a new version of VMWare tools installed.

1) I tried this, and the package downloads fine, but there is an error after that and tools are not updated, here is excerpt from log:

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

WMWare documentation does not provide anything helpful. Basically you are supposed to run the installer from a running guest, and if it doesn't work to contact the admin or vmware... This community is far more responsive in my experience.

Thanks.
