HDMI sound device disappeared

Hi all, I was trying to fix sound issues that I have had for a while (crackling and popping sounds coming from the HDMI output on my ati r9 285 card) and after attempting the steps (and reverting after) in the sound troubleshooting wiki, the HDMI output device doesn't show up in the GNOME sound settings any more and I don't get any sound through the monitor speakers. My headphones still work fine and instead of the HDMI device there is a Built-in Audio Analog Stereo device listed instead.

edit:
aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav, outputs audio so I know I haven't broken it (it still sounds distorted though). Applications still don't output through it.The playback devices are:
