I'm having sound problems since a recent update. Usually my sound used to be muted, which would be the quick fix. However, this time, it seems that something different is at play.

What else should I be looking for? Soundtest seems to work, as it is running, but no sound comes out of the speakers.

Maybe alsa is using wrong device by default. Did you try different devices with 'speaker-test -D'?
Offline
I'm not sure which device to use with the -D flag - default works, but I'm not sure which other ones I can pass to it.
Offline
I don't know which output you prefer, but 'hw:<card#>,<device#>' should work, for example hw:1,0 would use analog output, hw:0,3 would be HDMI0 etc.
I suspect your system is using HDMI as default card since it's card 0. If that's not what you want, check wiki on how to change that: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … sound_card
Offline
I'm getting this (even though aplay -l shows that this card is recognised).
[adam@hark ~]$ speaker-test -D hw:1,0
speaker-test 1.1.0
Playback device is hw:1,0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Channels count (1) not available for playbacks: Invalid argument
Setting of hwparams failed: [adam@hark ~]$ speaker-test -D hw:1,0
I've tried other combinations of cards and devices, but only default starts the process correctly.

What is the output of 'aplay -L' (that's a capital L).
Offline
Channels count (1) not available for playbacks: Invalid argument
$ speaker-test -h
...
-c,--channels count of channels in stream
try adding -c2 parameter as your device is most likely stereo.
Offline
$ aplay -L
[adam@hark ~]$ aplay -L

Adding the channels flag got sound working. So it seems I need to switch the default from HDMI to PCM. Thanks for the link - browsing it now.

So I have tried switching the default card with the /etc/modules.d/alsa-base.conf at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … sound_card
and the cards seem to load in a different order. However, the pcm card still doesn't work. I can get white noise out from:
$ speaker-test -c2 -D hw:0,0
but applications aren't picking this up.

You ALSA default device says you are using pulseaudio, so are you using it? have you checked which card is set as default in the pulse tools? can yoou post

OK. I finally fixed this by working out that I was using Pulse and then changing the pulse sink according to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … put_source - then I could put this in ~/.config/pulse/default.pa
