I am running latest stable Arch Linux with Gnome 3 installed. I have thumbnails working for most file types with nautilus, dolphin, thunar, nemo file browsers but not for smb shares. In nautilus I get image previews even on samba shares for but no video previews. On dolphin (best for me so far) I get image and text previews but no previews for videos or folder previews (images within folder are shows over the folder icon). Everything is working fine for local directories with any file manager. Also nautilus in Ubuntu is showing thumbnails for video and images on samba shares just fine. Why is this happening on Arch Linux?

Hi,
I have asked this question in the past since I see the exact same thing. On Ubuntu I have thumbnails for everything, also for Samba shared folders. I have never been able to make that work in Arch with Nautilus. If someone can figure this out it would solve a many years long problem for me on Arch.

It has to be some setting on your end. I use dolphin and I have thumbnails of videos AND video previews in the information panel for my samba shares.

Are the samba shares on the same machine as the physical disk? There are no settings in nemo relating to smb shares and only a few relating to previews.

My samba shares are on a different machine.

What OS is the samba host machine running and since when have the previews been working as they do now?

My server is running arch, headless.... you can see my machines in my signature. I don't think I've ever not had thumbs or previews for my smb shares. Music, videos and ebooks (epub and mobi) all show up on both my laptop and my desktop. do you have ffmpegthumbs installed?
