RAID1 on homepartition

Hello guys,

I have an encrypted computersystem where my rootpartion is on 1 raid1 configuration and my homepartion on another raid1 cluster.
Actually everything works fine but since I install my second hdd for the raid1 cluster where my home directory is mounted, I've got a strange behavior:

If I click on something (no matter what it is.. browser, filemanager etc.) my system often frozes for like 2 seconds. In this time I hear that one of my storage devices for my homepartion boots up.
Therefore I think that the second hdd falls asleep and comes up if i need it. But that takes a too long time..

How can I stop this?

Besides do you think, that a raid1 cluster for the homepartion is over the top?

In the past I had a raid0 cluster with 2 1TB hdd. But one of them died.
The problem was not the data (I had a backup) but the effort to reconfigure the whole homepartion. I mean, if one drive fails than your raid0 cluster too, right?
