Clicking sound on USB sound card when using optical digital output

Hello.

I bought a (rather cheap) USB sound card (a "DIGITUS 7.1 Sound Box") just to get a digital output to feed an external DAC.
On first sight it works fine, but using the SPDIF output, I hear an annoying regular ticking or clicking sound over the music with maybe 2-3 Hz. Additionally, there are sometimes irregular louder pops or clicks. The analog output is clean. (But that wasn't the idea, obviously.)

dmesg on plug-in:
[ 6480.890616] usb 5-1: current rate 30464 is different from the runtime rate 96000
[ 6480.916695] usb 5-1: Warning! Unlikely big volume range (=8065), cval->res is probably wrong.
[ 6480.916699] usb 5-1: [9] FU [Mic Playback Volume] ch = 2, val = -6144/1921/1

[ 6480.980601] usb 5-1: Warning! Unlikely big volume range (=6928), cval->res is probably wrong.

(The HID stuff is probably due to some buttons on top of the box to control volume and mute.)
I suspect that the rate mismatch might be part of the problem as disruptions in the data flow might well explain the effect. At least something goes wrong here. When I google for the messages, I find some threads that are finally solved by updating some package or reinstalling, but I can't seem to find a proper explanation or systematic fix.
The problem exists for some time now and actually survived a bunch of updates including the kernel.

Maybe also interesting:
- When i plugged the box to a WIndows 7 machine, I could only get the analog output to work. The digital output should probably have appeared as an additional sound device, but didn't. I did'n try anything else like installing drivers, though.
- When i connect the box to my android smartphone via OTG adapter, also the SPDIF output sounds fine. This is why I don't believe that the device is broken or just too crappy.

I am running out of ideas. Does anyone have a clue?

Thank you very much in advance and best regards,
Gurkensalat

I could have written the same post...bought a Sabrent USB-SND8 to get digital sound out through SPDIF and get same warnings and regular clicks in the sound. I've search the web but haven't found a fix. Have you had any luck?

Unfortunately, no.
I kind of gave up and bought a very old PCI card on ebay which supports SPDIF and hardware mixing.
We would probably have to contact ALSA developers / post in a forum there.

Re: Clicking sound on USB sound card when using optical digital output

Pity. I'll have to try to find a different usb card since it is a laptop without an HDMI connector. Maybe something else will work.

Thanks for responding!
