"intel_dp_link_training_channel_equalization" error on shutdown

I upgraded the firmware of my Dell XPS early 2015 to the latest version hosted by Dell. Now, if I shutdown by a method other than holding the power button, I get an error that halts the shutdown process. The key information seems to be,

[drm:intel_dp_link_training_channel_equalization [i915]] *ERROR* 5.4 Gbps link rate without HBR2/TPS3 support

I'm about to try compiling my first kernel to solve sound problems I'm having. Are there further modifications I can make to fix this problem?
