[SOLVED] Kangaroo PC (Intel x5-z8500) Audio

Installed Arch on a Kangaroo Plus Mini PC. See:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1605826  I installed using the official Arch iso, using various sources of information available in the Arch wiki.

Everything is working except sound. I've read that sound is available over HDMI and Bluetooth for this device. I have an HDMI cable/monitor plugged in that has an audio out jack for speakers that I have plugged in. I've also read that x86_64 sound for Linux is a no go, but have nothing to back it up. I've investigated to my abilities and i'm not sure how to proceed. It looks like there is no Linux driver available for this hardware?

I've tried the current Arch kernel, Arch testing kernel, and linux-mainline 4.5rc5-1 https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-mainline/

At this point, I've ordered a USB soundcard, but am still curious if I may have missed something and theres a way to get this working.

How to figure out what audio hardware is on board this device?

please post aplay -l (small lima) , aplay -L (capital Lima) .

lspci -k , lsusb , lsusb -t and full journal/dmesg would also help.


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

It does look like there's a kernel sound driver for this chipset,but it doesn't work for you.
You're not alone, I found several reports mentioning similar problems with kernel 3.19 and this hardware on other distros.

Some things you can do that have a chance (small?) of improving things :

Are you runing latest bios/uefi firmware ?
configure intel microcode updates
Have you tried with linux-firmware-git from aur?


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

I'll be trying this within the next few days and will report back with the results here.

Hi NuSkool, I'm the package maintainer for it and I can confirm it works with my up-board which is a cherry trail based device. I know that the patch also works on intel compute sticks (as there's someone who has created their own patch for ubuntu), but I can't say for certain if it'll work for your Kangaroo PC (though I don't know why it shouldn't if it's a cherry trail device also).

The wiki page also has some more info about creating the patch yourself, with some links about eventual audio support via HDMI being integrated into the kernel. The wiki page is here.

OK, I can confirm that basica's patched kernel https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=339255 does provide sound over HDMI on my Kangaroo plus.

For anyone trying this kernel, you will need to get Linus Torvalds and Greg Kroah-Hartman's public pgp keys prior to building.

Glad to hear that it worked for you, NuSkool. I know I was quite chuffed to get it working too - especially since the main reason I got my up-board was to be a media server.
