autoconf problems

i am trying to compile e17 cvs libraries. for one of them i get this error

the same code works fine on fedora and ubuntu. they also use version 2.59

i tried to downgrade to arch's 2.59-1 but then i get errors, since we just recently changed to gawk. so i guess i would run into too many dependency problems that way.
is anybody else having issues with autoconf? i tried abs and get the same error.
any ideas what might be wrong?

fouiny's e17-cvs repo has PKGBUILDs, and binaries, for the whole e17 suite. Have a look at them and see how he did it.

i did exactly what he did in his pkgbuild and i still get the same error. No one else on other distros is having the same problem, at least not the ppl i asked.
how can i get my hand on another version of autoconf without messing up the dependencies?
