shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

I'm having serious issues with video editing...

Hardware: Dell Precision workstation with dual Xeon X5690, a ridiculous amount of RAM and a Quadro 4000 graphics card. Shouldn't be limiting.

I had a recent Manjaro installation on this machine (done in January) with the default KDE DE. vlc player and KDEnlive both worked fine, the system felt responsive - however, KDE's file managers crashed so often on me that I got tired of KDE one more time and thought "screw it, let's switch back to the original and install Arch, not Manjaro". (Installing Arch is a major pain if you just want a working machine to get things done, btw)

Strange enough, when I replay the video files from my HD cam (MTS files in HD 1920x1080 50p), vls stutters and shows mostly greyed out blur - maybe a clear frame every half minute. wtf?

When I start a project in KDEnlive and want to add files, the file opening dialog crashes. Every time.

Codecs? Checked, all there. GPU drivers? Nouveau 1.0.12-1 and nvidia 361.28-2.

What's wrong here?

You have both Nouveau and nVidia installed?  I'd uninstall Nouveau and see if that helps - you should ideally only have one of them installed.

Re: shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

Thanks for your quick reply!

pacman -R xf86-video-nouveau

Tried with vlc - no changes, 2 fps and mostly a greyed out, blocked, blurred mess.

I noticed that there's an OpenCL package. Just installed that (pacman -S opencl-nvidia). Still no change. Rebooted, nothing. Still unusable.

About the KDEnlive crashes on "add clip": could this be linked to problems with the .MTS file format? Do I have to ffmpeg re-encode several TB of video files just to open them in an editor or player? Can't be - and why did it work in Manjaro??

Gotten curious... installed OpenShot: OpenShot plays the imported MTS files with no problems. So it seems to be no codec problem.

Double check with vlc: Still not working.

FIY: cam is Panasonic V707, MTS file sizes are 4,3 GB max. All according to specs, afaik.

Edit: Checked with MPlayer. Works perfectly.

Some of MPlayer's output:

Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family

Have you tried another video player?  Like mpv?  If that works then the focus can move to vlc itself.

Re: shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

mpv also works perfectly. So the problem has to do with vlc.

I have a player to preview the clips now, that's one problem solved. (Doesn't have to be vlc, anything will do).

However, I'm less flexible with the video editor. I've tried OpenShot, it's not bad. but rather limited. I prefer to work with KDEnlive. If I can get it to work somehow...

I'm not familiar with KDEnlive, I don't use anything KDE.  Is there an option to specify your playback program with it?

Re: shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

If KDEnlive uses KDE's phonon backend for playback, you could try to install phonon-gstreamer instead of phonon-vlc, since vlc is causing troubles on your current installation.

Re: shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

I had phonon-qt5 and phonon-qt5-gstreamer installed already. I've now added phonon-qt5-vlc. Still no change, vlc is unusable with .MTS files.

I've checked if I can see any hint about the engine in KDEnlive, but could not find any. It only asks about codecs and players, but not about the backend.

HOwever, the strange behaviour continues: I start a new, empty project, and if I open "add clip" a new window pops up and crashes. It's not causing any cpu load, it just hangs until I kill KDEnlive. So the program is completely unusable, no matter which file format I intend to load. I can't open ANY files. Is this a known KDEnlive issue?

Re: shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

OK, more investigation....

Based on this recommendation (http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … ne-finding) I've tried:

$ kdenlive |& tee kdenlive.log

the last lines before the crash are:

Removing cache at "/home/  "user"  /.cache/kdenlive-thumbs.kcache"
KServiceTypeTrader: serviceType "ThumbCreator" not found
KServiceTypeTrader: serviceType "ThumbCreator" not found
KSambaShare: Could not find smb.conf!

smb.conf? I don't need Samba. Running a Linux only environment here...

Edit:

feeding Google gives me this:

https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=265&t=129049

It's a known issue. No fix yet (as of Oct 2015), just a workaround.

Edit II:

Workaround ("press Esc") does not work.

Just updated to KDEnlive-15.12.3-1-x86-64. Checked again, and.... nope. Trying to add a clip still makes the dialog window freeze and KDEnlive crash.

Still unusable.

Re: shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

I am having the same issue with VLC and nvidia 770 (official drivers). It used to work fine, but now all I get is artifacts and stuttering. No matter what hardware acceleration settings and overlay I use.

MPV works perfectly with any setting (vdpau and software).

This VLC issue does not seem to be video type specific (happens with h264 and mpeg2). I use mate and compiz.

Any updates on this lnxsrt?

Man, I love vlc for both my music and video player, but I think I am experiencing the same things you are

I have a gtx 970, watching mp4s shouldn't suck this much hmm

Re: shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

For the longest time I had a similar sounding issue in VLC which I assumed was graphics card or graphics driver related (Nvidia GTX 970, binary drivers) but I finally tracked it down to being audio related - specifically it affects VLC users who use ALSA.

Here's a Gentoo bug thread about it:

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=523366

The patch in comment #10 will solve the issue in VLC 2.2.1-r1, assuming you are having the same issue.

Re: shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

VLC 2.2.2 still has this behavior.

I haven't taken the time to apply the patch, but just disabling the audio track gives smooth playback. So audio/ALSA is definitely the cause on my machine.

VLC 2.2.3 still has this for me. Anyone else?

Shocked this hasn't been patched upstream yet.

Re: shitty video performance (vlc, KDEnlive), worked before in Manjaro

According to the VLC issue referenced in the gentoo ticket this has been patched in git master.
The milestone of the ticket is "3.0.0 FF" , that suggests 3.0.0 will be first released version that has thepatch.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
