Frozen at Grub

I just upgraded to the beyond kernel and setup gensplash. Unfortunately, when I rebooted the system, all I ended up with was "GRUB _" with a blinking cursor. I have no idea what happened. My menu.lst file didn't have any errors in it.

So now I'm trying to reinstall Grub. My first attempt left me with a blank screen with a blinking cursor. How do I go about installing grub given the below configuration?

/dev/hda1   /boot
/dev/hda2  swap
/dev/hda3  /home
/dev/hda5  /

thanks. I thought I did the right steps using grub, but in the end, grub-install is what fixed my problem.
