[Solved] Issue With Shutting Down Laptop

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this issue but the issue is on my laptop so I figured this would be my best bet.

Anyways to the issue. Every time I attempt to shut down my laptop (Asus PU551LA if that's relevant) the screen instantly goes blank however the backlight stays on. It will remain so until the battery drains or until I force it to switch off by holding the power button. The methods I have used to shut down the laptop are as follows:

  • Pressing the shutdown button in Gnome 3.0

  • Pressing the reboot button in Gnome 3.0

  • Using:

    Reboot

    in terminal.

  • Using:

    shutdown

    in terminal.

  • Using:

    systemctl poweroff

    in terminal.

I have also attempted to use the commands listed using sudo and also when logged in as root.

This issue initially only would only happen from time to time, then it started happening 3 or 4 shutdowns in a row and after would revert back to normal and now it happens every time I attempt to power the laptop down.

Any help solving this would be greatly appreciated.
If you need any other info let me know.

Re: [Solved] Issue With Shutting Down Laptop

You can start by looking at journallogs. To look at the logs from 15th March...

journalctl -S 2016-03-15

you can upload logs to pastebin client like ubuntu paste, and post link here

Re: [Solved] Issue With Shutting Down Laptop

I could find only one shutdown in your journal, and I couldn't find any errors there (excluding errors related with steam)! Do you get any error on boot due to improper shutdown? As shutdown looks good to me.
Do you get same error if you do "systemctl poweroff" from console with gnome not running?

I don't understand why Steam is causing so many errors.

Other than the system checking for orphaned files and cleaning up the HDD as it normally does at boot I don't get any errors.
Also, after exiting gdm and running

systemctl poweroff

it shutdown correctly and I haven't had the issue since when running gnome.

I would still like to get to the bottom of what caused the issue in the first place so that I can prevent it from happening in the future.
If it's relevant the laptop is suspended quite often as I commute to and from uni every day.

Re: [Solved] Issue With Shutting Down Laptop

I feel it is most probably gdm/gnome issue, as you can poweroff correctly with gnome not running. As further test you may try to disable gdm and start gnome from console, to see if it shutdown correctly.

That's what I did after you suggested using systemctl poweroff outside of gnome.
It works fine now that I've done that.
I'll make a new post if the issue returns.
