Ran SMART on all of my HDD's, need help with interpretation

As I understand "if the Normalized value (VALUE) is less than or equal to the Threshold (THRESH) value, then the Attribute is said to have failed". Apparently "Reallocated_Sector_Ct" also plays a role. I've been googling and reading the manage for SMART, but i'm still not 100% sure how to translate SMARTS output to real data, as in which one of the HDD's are likely to fail and how to understand the data?

A couple of the hdd's have been running 24/7 for years.

Thanks

Re: Ran SMART on all of my HDD's, need help with interpretation

Drives sdc and sde both have fairly high load cycle counts.  You may want to fix that: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=66706
Drives sdd and sdf have some frightening read error rates and seek error rates.  You have backups, right?

Re: Ran SMART on all of my HDD's, need help with interpretation

/dev/sdc1 (server hdd with os archlinux) 2016-04-03 has reallocated sectors, unless that number remains stable I would not trust that drive. As ewaller says you might want to do something to prevent high load cycle counts.

I believe some drives are rated for 300k load cycles, I'm not sure what happens after that but it most probably affects reliability so better have backups, and you have some drives with really high load cycle counts.

Regarding the high read error rates, that is normal for seagate drives, just check that the normalized value does not get close or crosses the threshold, _however_ for any other brand I would replace the disk if the raw number starts to increase.

Good to know.

Greenfish:  BTW, SMART data are highly manufacturer specific.  Without a score card, it is hard to compare apples to oranges.  My best advise is to watch for changes on an individual drive.

Edit:  But, the error rates are still frightening, even if the normalized data mitigate the high pucker factor[1]

Much appreciated for the fast response guys, much appreciated. To answer your questions if I have backups, sadly no, not on the hdd's containing movies. I rip my own bluray from my collection so in worst case scenario I could re-rip but that's something I don't want to do, because it will take an insane amount of time.

Here's my plan:

* fsck sdc, sdd, sde, & sdf

* Replace sdc (western digital) & sde (western digital) with a new hdd, copy the OLD data from sdc to a new one? Is that viable? Can I just run fsck and then just copy the movies onto the new HDD regardless of how old/wear the other hdd is?

* Replace a HDD when it starts to pass 300k cycle counts and keeping my eye on the threshold numbers. Thanks R00KIE for the seagate information, wasn't aware of that.

Sorry for being a bit obtuse guys, I haven't been active in the linux community for a few years. Will read and correct the high load cycle count https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=66706.

It is a slang term I learned when I was learning to fly.  In context:  "This is going to be a high pucker factor approach given those crosswinds"  big_smile

Re: Ran SMART on all of my HDD's, need help with interpretation

I think this has been overlooked so far (sda):

197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 199 198 000 Old_age Always - 527

That number refers to sectors that have been identified as needing reallocation but haven't been reallocated yet. One surefire way to get them reallocated is to run the WD bootable diagnostic* and run a quick test. That said, once they're reallocated, I'm pretty sure Reallocated_Sector_Ct will be below the threshold.

* Which is DOS based, and IIRC WD no longer maintains it so it may be a bit difficult to locate.

The raw values are effectively garbage; I've seen brand new drives with similar values.

But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.

Good catch there about the pending sectors alphaniner. According to wikipedia[1] (which is always right tongue) pending sectors might not be always reallocated.

If I recall correctly those might be caused by any number of things and might not always indicate that the disk is going bad. I have disks that have been working fine where I've had pending sectors and after a write over those sectors the raw value went to zero and I didn't have any further problems. However if it starts happening often them something is definitely wrong.
