issues with xfwm4 and xfce4-panel

Hi everyone!

I've been having issues in the last few weeks with XFCE on my 3 years old Arch Linux install. One day suddenly, booting didn't start xfwm4. I put it manually in .bashrc, it worked for a while then failed again. I then put it (xfwm4) as a startup up under the "Startup and sessions" configuration window, it worked but then xfce4-panel would crash after a few minutes.

Regardless if xfwm4 didn't start or xfce4-panel crash, I can start them by hand (xfwm4 & / xfce4-panel), but I'd like to see if there is a way to solve this.

I've also notice that a full system upgrades generally solves the issue for a few weeks.

I can also confirm that this appears without any major change on the PC. For example, I was using my PC earlier today with no specific configuration change, then I turned it off and when I turned it on again, the problem was there again.

My question: does someone know where I can find the appropriate debug logs to have at least a clue about what is happening?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Re: issues with xfwm4 and xfce4-panel

Sounds like you might be suffering from a corruption of the saved sessions cache. Try clearing this cache either via Settings Manager > Session and startup > Session > "Clear saved sessions", logging out without selecting the option to save your session, and logging back in. The other method is to delete the contents of ~/.cache/sessions when not logged in.

As for the log file, depending on how you start Xfce, your DM may create a log for Xfce session logging, or if logging in manually, try using the command:

startxfce4 > ~/.xsession-errors 2>&1

...to create an ~/.xsession-errors log file that Xfce will use.

Re: issues with xfwm4 and xfce4-panel

Hi toz,

Thanks for that.

I did try the "Clear saved sessions" button without success, but I'll remove the folder by hand as well.  Thank you for that and for the debug log command. I start xfce via .xinitrc so I should be able to generate the logs as well. I will try that a little later and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!
