What do you think about adding $Id tags to all major files in /etc like for example in FreeBSD or OpenBSD. It definetly help identify which version/revision a particular file is by just looking at it. I don't think it's that much hassle to add that, but the benefits of it can be great
It could be in the form of:
$Arch: <filename>,v <revision> <timestamp> <developer> Exp $

what you mean is probably the equivalent to "$Id$" in CVS.
i agree, that should be added.

I added a feature request in bugtracker. Let's see how developers respond. CVS tags in /etc files really help to identify right away revisions of files.

I don't see any need in this. Why do you need version info?

Revision information IMHO is very important in /etc files. Basically it lets you know when the file was last modified by the Arch Linux developer team. /etc files are vital for the system.

Just use 'pacman -Qo file' to get the version of package. This is in case you want report bug(s). That's only case I can see to know version/revision of the file.
