Testing out LXQt made my fonts ugly, and it persists after switching back to MATE. Changing the settings does not fix it: fonts looks identical regardless of whether Smoothing is set to "None", "Grayscale" or "Subpixel (LCDs)", and regardless of subpixel order. Changing Hinting between "Slight", "Medium" and "Full" makes no difference either. The only option that has any effect is changing Hinting to "None", and even that only affects non-GTK3 applications.
EDIT: The problem was that LXQt replaced my ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf with one it created. Deleting it and renaming the backup fixed the problem.

I don't have a /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-hinting-slight.conf or /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-hinting-slight.conf.
EDIT: I actually haven't updated to fontcofig 2.11.95 yet.
