Hello, after I restarted my computer after some updates arch Linux boots to the terminal instead of the login manager. Attempting to start KDE with the startkde command results in the error " $DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server. Searching for that error message only found me topics of little value or were out of date
Running the command startx displays some text that goes by to fast to read and then leaves the screen showing https://imgur.com/J4ya3qB?rthis
With further attempts to do anything else on that TTY seeming to be not doing anything.
Trying startkde on another TTY after that results on the same message. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to Arch Linux.
The picture you provided is an image of the twm environment you would expect to see if you ran startx with no ~/.xinitrc. So, the X server works.
You do not run startkde by hand from a terminal. You want to create a file called ~/.xinitrc that conatins the line startkde (at a minimum). Then you run startx
Edit: See :https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinitrc

Thanks for the reply, after putting startkde into ~/xinitrc it worked after running startx, reboot still boots to the terminal not the KDE login manager but will figure that out on my own.
Not sure what would have caused this, only thing I had done in the previous session was run Paxman -Syu it updated a lot of the KDE packages then rebooted to this issue.

'ewaller' posted a link to the Arch xinitrc - at the end is the: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xi … mmand_line
You could try with the command:
startx /usr/bin/startkdeImage: http://i.imgur.com/SAM6Fms.gif
Do you get the Plasma desktop or some error messages ?

The pacman is keeping logs at: /var/log/pacman.log
Maybe they will show what happened.

After putting startkde into ~/.xinitrc it booted into the plasma desktop with no errors. The ~/.xinitrc file was empty if that is any clue.

Looking at the log file, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Here it is if it is of any help.

Edit, Got it working fine again. Still not sure what caused it to get f'd up as literally the only thing that happened that boot was the update and restart. Either way it is now in the past. Thanks!
